MADISON, NJ (November 2, 2019) ---
Emily Harrington ended her women's soccer career at King's in the best possible way scoring the game-winning goal in the 103rd minute to give the Monarchs a 1-0 victory at FDU-Florham in the season finale on Saturday from Robert Shields Field in Madison, NJ.
Harrington, who also scored KC's lone goal in a 1-0 victory over the Devils (12-7-1, 2-5-0 MAC Freedom) last year, found herself with the ball and just two defenders in between her and the FDU-Florham keeper. The forward cut the gap between the two Devils and then slipped a shot under a diving kepper's arms into the lower left from the top of the box 2:48 into the second extra session.
The Monarchs (7-10-1, 2-5-0 MAC Freedom) played the hosts to a defensive battle over the first 10 minutes with the only shot coming from nearly 35 yards out from Amanda Croce that
Erica Blackburn made easy work on after a couple of bounces. King's responded with a chance of their own in the 12th minute as
Abby Castle put a shot on goal that Ashley Paulino kept out of the net. The Monarch defense did an excellent job limiting the chances for the Devils and Blackburn came up huge whenever she was called on to make a save. Late in the half the Devils nearly scored as Nathalia Gallo picked up a rebound off a save in the box and sent the ball past Blackburn and towards the right post in the final minute of the half.
Kara Keim was there for the Monarchs to keep the ball out of the back of net.
King's came out strong in the second half as
Breanna Jacinto made Paulino make a save in the opening minutes setting up a corner kick. The Monarchs were unable to get a shot off on the corner but a couple minutes later
Casey Genovese had her attempt blocked by a defender. FDU responded with a strong attack in the 59th minute putting three shots on goal. Each time Blackburn denied the attempts to keep the match scoreless. As the match went on, the host started to control more possession and limit the Monarch attacking chances, but the KC was up for the challenge as they did aa great job against the FDU-Florham forwards sending the match into extra time.
After a scoreless first 10 minutes of extra time, the home team started the second extra session earning a corner kick two minutes in. The Monarchs cleared the corner away to Harrington who attacked the Devil defense on the counterattack for the game winning goal.
FDU-Florham held a 22-11 shot advantage, but the difference was much closer in shots on goal as Blackburn made nine saves compared to Paulino's five. Harrington scored her eighth goal of the year and ended the year the same way she started, with the game-winning goal.
