MARLBOROUGH, MA (November 23, 2019) --- The King's College women's ice hockey team earned their first point of the season with a 1-1 tie with host Anna Maria College on Saturday afternoon from New England Sports Center in Marlborough.
King's took advantage of the first penalty of the game as
Raeann Clancey lit the lamp for the first time this season and second time in her career to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead 9:24 into the game. Her goal came just over a minute into the opportunity. The Monarchs finished the first period outshooting the Amcats 14-8 including a pair of shots by
Meghan Mietlicki and
Josée Aitken that AMC goalie Gabrielle kept out of the net in the final 10 seconds.
The Monarchs (0-5-1) had two successful penalty kills to begin the second period before the hosts managed to tie the game up on a rebounded goal off the stick of Abigail Vigliotte.
Kiva Sierra Stoltz was able to stop the initial shot by Grace Dodge but unfortunately for the Monarchs the puck bounced right to Vigliotte who lit the lamp for her first of the season nine minutes into the period. The Amcats out shot the Monarchs 19-7 in the period as Stoltz made 18 saves.
The third period consisted on seven penalties as each team was able to successfully kill off the extra woman advantage. Anna Maria had a 5v3 advantage in the last minute of regulation after the Monarchs were called for a penalty with 1:01 on the clock and the hosts already a woman up. Stoltz came up big for the Monarchs in net making three big saves in the final minute to send the game into overtime.
In the extra session King's fought off an AMC power play in the first minute and then another penalty kill midway through the five-minute session. A penalty was called on the Amcats with just under a minute to go but two shots by
Erin King and
Ali Noeding went wide as the Monarchs settled for one point.
AMC finished with a 44-29 shot advantage as Stoltz made 43 saves to give her 84 in the weekend series. King and Noeding each recorded five shots while
Morgan Almon had four. Aitken won 15 of 32 faceoffs for the Monarchs while
Tessa Schaefer-Flynn won seven of 11 attempts.
The Monarchs will return to the ice on Friday December 6 when they face off against Lebanon Valley College in Reading, PA on the first day of the Keystone Holiday Classic hosted by Alvernia. Puck drop is scheduled for 5 pm. KC will then face either the host Golden Wolves or Neumann University on the second day of the Classic.
