GENEVA, NY (November 9, 2019) --- The King's College women's ice hockey team showed much improvement in their season opener at William Smith College, but the host Herons defeated the Monarchs 8-0 in front of 125 fans at The Cooler in Geneva in an United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) game.
WSC (4-0-0, 1-0-0 UCHC) scored three times in the first period, twice in the second, and then three times in the third while outshooting the Monarchs (0-1-0, 0-1-0 UCHC) 63-17. King's played very well defensively despite the large shot total by the hosts and received excellent goaltending by
Kiva Sierra Stoltz and
Hannah Bowers. The Monarchs defense blocked 19 shots in the game led by five each from
Erin King and
Kateri Heithaus.
Raeann Clancey and
Morgan Almon added three blocks each while
Mary Deyell,
Meghan Mietlicki, and
Caitlin Redden had one apiece.
Stoltz made 18 saves in the first period, 22 in the second, and then four more in the third to finish with 44 before being replaced for the final 14:10.
Hannah Bowers made her Monarch debut in net replacing Stoltz and made 11 saves while allowing one goal in 13:50 minutes of action.
The Monarchs limited the Herons to just one power play goal on five opportunities but were unable to capitalize on any of their five chances. William Smith got on the board 6:46 into the first period and then capitalized on the first penalty of the game with their only power play goal at the 12:23 mark. The final goal of the period came with 3:14 left in the period. Both goals of the second period came within a minute of each other as the Herons score at 15:13 and 16:09. The third period goals were spread out with WSC scoring at 1:28, 5:50, and 15:46.
Seven different Herons lit the lamp with Alisa Canney leading the way with two goals. 15 different skaters recorded a point for the hosts as Laura Hill and Emily Martino were the leading point-recorders with three points on a goal and two assists each. Olivia Williams made 17 saves in net to pick up the shutout.
Josée Aitken led the Monarchs with four shots while
Ali Noeding, Heithaus, and Almon took two shots each. Seven different Monarchs recorded one shot.
King's will face another tough test tomorrow afternoon as they face third-ranked Elmira College in Pine Valley, New York. The Soaring Eagles began their season with a huge 12-0 win over Wilkes on Saturday afternoon.
