Second Half Dooms Monarchs at Drew

MADISON, NJ (December 4, 2019) -- Despite trailing by just four at halftime, a big second half by Drew that saw the hosts outscore the Monarchs 53-37 doomed the King's College men's basketball team as they fell, 87-67. With the loss, the Monarchs fall to 5-3 on the season.

King's jumped to an early 4-0 lead behind baskets by senior Joe Lonardi and sophomore JJ Glinsky before Drew used a 20-2 run to take the lead with 9:22 left in the half. The Monarchs pulled within single-digits on four separate occasions with the Rangers regaining their double-digit lead each time. Then, with 1:10 remaining in the first half, King's pulled within four behind four points from freshman Bryan Henderson and a three by sophomore Kevin Hunter inched within four, 34-30, heading into the locker room.

After the break, the Monarchs continued their hot shooting, tying the game at 38 on a fast break jumper by senior Josh Bailey with 17:06 to go. King's then took their first lead since the start of the game, 43-40, on a layup by Henderson at the 16:02 mark. The Rangers responded, regaining the lead and pulling ahead by 14, 60-46, with 12:43 to go. Drew built their lead to as much as 29 points before posting the final, 87-67.

Henderson was excellent once again off the bench, leading the team with a game-high 20 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, and a perfect 7-for-7 from the charity stripe. He also added three assists. Senior Josh Bailey was the other Monarch in double-figures, totaling 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting, adding a career-high tying eight rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Lonardi led in the rebounding column for King's, totaling nine and adding six points. Other top Monarchs were juniors Brad Kalinowski with eight points and Pat Mitchell with seven boards.

As a team, the Monarchs dished out 14 assists on their 23 made field goals, shooting 31.5 percent for the game. Looking inside the box score, they held the advantage in second-chance points, outscoring the Rangers 13-4.

The Monarchs are off until the New Year when they return home to face Penn College on January 2 at 7:00 p.m. in McGrane Gymnasium.
