READING, PA (December 7, 2019) --- The King's College women's ice hockey team scored a program record four goals to defeat Alvernia University 4-2 on Saturday afternoon on the second day of the Keystone Holiday Classic from Body Zone Sports Complex in Reading.
The Monarchs (1-6-1) received two goals each from
Josée Aitken and
Caitlin Redden to defeat the host Golden Wolves (2-7-0) in the first-ever meeting between the programs.
King's got on the board first 11 minutes into the game when Aitken knocked in a rebound off a shot by
Alyssa Cussatt for her 10th career goal. The assist was the first point of Cussatt's career in the freshman's eighth game. Not even a minute later the Monarchs struck again as
Caitlin Redden knocked in a loose puck in front of the goal for her second of the season.
Erin King and
Sarah Lawson assisted on the play. The assist was the first of the season and fourth of King's career while Lawson recorded her first career point.
Alvernia cut the lead in half 12 minutes into the second period when Olivia Gilida scored her seventh goal of the year with eight seconds remaining of a power play opportunity. The Monarchs struck right back a little under two minutes later as Redden lit the lamp for the second time as King's capitalized 21 seconds into their second power play opportunity of the game. Aitken and
Meghan Mietlicki recorded their first assists of the season of the play. The assist was also the fifth of Mietlicki's career. The Golden Wolves kept things interesting as Gilida scored her second goal of the game with four minutes to go in the period to cut the lead to 3-2.
Aitken gave the Monarchs a little more breathing room midway through the third period with a power play goal with King's playing two women up. Mietlicki and
Mary Deyell recorded their second assists of the year.
The Monarchs were called for a season high 10 penalties; however, KC was excellent on the penalty kill allowing just one power play goal by Alvernia. Redden took seven of the team's season high 34 shots while Aitken, King, and
Maggie Gould took four each. Aitken and
Kateri Heithaus won 11 faceoffs each while
Tessa Schaefer-Flynn won seven.
Hannah Bowers made 33 saves in goal to record her first collegiate win in her third appearance. The sophomore stopped nine pucks in the first 20 minutes, 10 in the second, and 14 in the third. It also marked the fourth straight game King's has allowed two goals or less.
King's will now break for finals and Christmas before returning to the ice on January 7, 2020 with a non-conference trip to Connecticut to face Post University at 2 pm.
