PITTSTON, PA (February 15, 2019) –
Mary Deyell scored on a breakaway goal in the second period for her 10th career point as the King's College women's ice hockey team fell to visiting Neumann University 7-1 on Friday evening in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) matchup from the Revolution Ice Center.
The Monarchs put together a spirited fight against the Knights in their final home game of the season as they looked to spoil Neumann's chances at making the UCHC playoffs next week. NU entered the weekend needing two wins over the Monarchs and two Stevenson losses to Elmira to move into the sixth and final qualifying spot in the UCHC standings. They are halfway there after the Soaring Eagles shutout the Mustangs 3-0 down in Maryland.
The Knights (7-16-1, (6-10-1 UCHC) were led by their high-scoring senior Jackie Scheider who lit the lamp four times in the game including twice in the opening period and won a game-high 18 faceoffs. The forward entered the game ranked 11th in the nation in goals per game and moved up to seventh with her performance against the Monarchs (1-22-1, 0-17-0 UCHC).
Deyell's second goal of the season came in the second period as the Knights held a 4-0 lead.
Meghan Mietlicki knocked the puck from behind King's net along the boards out the Deyell on the right side. The sophomore gathered the puck and raced up the right side of the ice with just the goalie to beat. Her wrist shot squeezed right past the pads of Helen Cooney and into the back of the goal at 6:42 of the period. The assist was the fourth of the year for Mietlicki.
Kiva Sierra Stoltz made 53 saves in net for King's as the Knights held a 60-30 shot advantage in the game. The 53 saves are the third-most in a game this season by Stoltz. The 30 shots in a game for the Monarchs are tied for the fourth-most they have taken this year.
Josée Aitken led the way with seven while
Caitlin Redden took six. Aitken was also very good in the faceoff circle winning five of nine attempts.
Erin King and Deyell had five shots each.
Tessa Schaefer-Flynn won a team-high 10 faceoffs.
Schneider had four goals on nine shots for the Knights while Angeline Taiariol recorded four assists while taking 10 shots. Emma Paton added three assists while Steph Grundy recorded two assists.
