Third Period Comeback Attempt Falls Short For Monarch Men’s Ice Hockey At Nazareth

ROCHESTER, NY (February 16, 2019) – Senior Nicholas Gullo scored a goal and had an assist to lead a furious King's College men's ice hockey comeback attempt in their season-ending United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) game at Nazareth College on Saturday afternoon in Rochester.

The host Golden Flyers scored once in the first and twice in the second to take a 3-0 lead heading into the final 20 minutes. King's wasted little time in the third period cutting into the deficit as Luciano Bucci scored just over two minutes into the period off Gullo's second assist of the season. KC found themselves in a one-goal game just three minutes later when Gullo scored his second goal of the season off a rebounded shot by classmate Jamie Lukas.

The Monarchs pressured the Golden Flyers for the game-tying goal and had a great opportunity with just over five minutes left as two penalties by the host gave KC a two-man advantage on the ice. Nicholas Palumbo and Tyler O'Mara had shots saved by Andy Lee sandwiched around Gullo hitting the pipe during the power play opportunities. Unfortunately for King's, the Golden Flyers killed off both penalties to return to even strength.

Nazareth took advantage of King's pulling Brandon Daigle in goal two times over the final 1:45 with two empty net goals to set the final score. After being outshot by the Flyers 31-14 in the first two periods, KC doubled their shot total in the third with 15 shots in the period while holding the hosts to 13.

Playing in his final collegiate game, Gullo led the Monarchs with a goal and an assist while taking a team-high six shots. He finishes his career with 16 points on five goals and 11 assists. Lukas took three shots and had an assist while to finish his collegiate career with 23 points on 13 goals and 10 assists. Bucci had one goal on five shots while winning 14 of 29 faceoffs. The sophomore recorded his 30th career point and 10th career goal. Brandon Daigle made 39 saves while facing 42 shots in goal to finish his rookie campaign with a 4.65 GAA and a .891 save percentage while making 689 saves.

Alex Corvi, Ray Falso, and Brad Pizzey had a goal and an assist each for Nazareth. Both of Pizzey's points came on the two empty net goals in the final 1:05 of play. Andy Lee made 27 saves on 29 shots in goal to pick up his third win of the year.

The Monarchs recorded their second-highest shot total of the season with 29 and were successful of five of six penalty kills.
