Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Second Half Surge Pushes Moravian Past Women’s Lacrosse Wednesday

BETHLEHEM, PA (February 27, 2019) – The King's College women's lacrosse team trailed by just two at 8-6 with 19:13 to play in regulation, but eight straight goals by host Moravian College put the game out of reach as the Monarchs fell 18-6 in non-conference action from John Makuvek Field.

The Monarchs (1-2) got things going early on just 43 seconds into the game, as sophomore Emma Lehman netted her fourth goal of the season unassisted. Moravian answered with three straight tallies over the next four minutes before freshman Jen O'Connor tallied at the 20:00 mark unassisted on a free position shot to make it 3-2.

Goals by Moravian's Liz Bill and Jillian Picciuto made the score 5-2 in favor of the hosts, but King's stayed in the game thanks to the play from sophomore Orla Cottell. The second-year keeper made 13 first-half stops, and King's pulled to within two at 14:50 of the first half as freshman Natasha Koslop potted her sixth of the season off a nice pass from O'Connor.

More great goalkeeping from Cottell led to King's pulling to within one with the woman advantage, as sophomore Kylie McCarthy collected her first of the night off a nice pass from classmate Mary Kate Klodarska with 9:46 to play in the first half. The Greyhounds would break through twice just before halftime to make it a 7-4 game at the intermission.

After Danielle Sullivan scored early in the second half, King's got back into the offensive rhythm as freshman Emily Sims tallied a brilliant quick stick goal off a Klodarska feed to make it 8-5. Minutes later, King's completed a nice transition play through the midfield as O'Connor drew two defenders and laid the pass off for McCarthy for her second of the game to make it 8-6 with 19:13 to go.

The Greyhounds would go on the offensive from that point on, using an 8-0 run from the 18:42 mark of the game until 5:44 left to make it 16-6. King's finished the game with two goals, as freshman Bailey Jordan scored unassisted for her second of the season, while Sims tallied again straight off a draw control as Klodarska feed the freshman for the goal. In the end though, it wasn't enough as the Monarchs fell on the road for the second straight game.

Cottell was stellar in net all night for the Monarchs, as she tied her career-high with 19 saves including stopping four free-position shots. Sims paced King's with a team-high six shots, adding two ground balls and two caused turnovers in addition to her two scores. McCarthy needed just two shots for her two tallies, as she has now potted six goals on seven shots in 2019.

O'Connor had another all-around strong game in the midfield, collecting a team-best three draw controls in addition to team-bests of four caused turnovers and six ground balls. Koslop also finished with three ground balls with her one goal, and defender Kelly Pierce was strong on the clear while forcing two turnovers and picking up four ground balls.

Klodarska was solid away from the ball, as she established a new career-high for assists with three, adding three ground balls and two draw controls.

Sullivan paced Moravian with five goals, and Bill and Picciuto each had four goals apiece for the Greyhounds. Draw controls were a story for the hosts, as Moravian posted a 19-6 edge in draws while adding a 34-18 edge in ground balls. The Greyhounds also outshot King's 44-21 on the night.

King's is off until next Wednesday, taking on the United States Merchant Marine Academy down in Clearwater, FL in the first of two games in the Sunshine State. Game time is set for Wednesday, March 6 at 10:00 a.m. at the Countryside Sports Complex.
