PITTSTON, PA (February 9, 2019) – Sophomore
Morgan Almon knocked in her first career goal to jump start a strong third period for the King's College women's ice hockey as they fell short in a furious comeback attempt during a 4-2 loss to Lebanon Valley on Saturday afternoon from the Revolution Ice Centre.
The teams began their weekend United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) and Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) with a closely competitive game. The Flying Dutchmen (5-16-1, 2-15-0 UCHC, 1-4-0 MAC) took the lead when Olivia Cindrich scored at 11:41 of the first period for her seventh goal of the season. That score stood until Chloe Glass scored unassisted with 16 seconds left in the second period to give the visitors a two-goal advantage.
Almond started the comeback at the four-minute mark of the third when she received a pass behind the net from
Caitlin Redden and wrapped around in front of the goal knocking the puck into the back of the net to cut the lead in half. All the momentum of the game seemed to turn towards the Monarchs as LVC was called for a penalty right after the goal to put King's on the power play.
The Monarchs were on the power play for 47 seconds before being called for too many women on the ice. Once LVC got back to full strength, they took advantage of their own power play opportunity as Darby Seymour scored her second goal of the year to push the lead to 3-1 with 12:59 left.
King's was not fazed by the two-goal deficit and was rewarded for their strong play at the 15:15 mark when
Josée Aitken tallied her second goal of the year on a breakaway off assists from
Mary Deyell and
Erin King. King started the play with a centering pass to Deyell. Deyell then relayed a pass off the boards to a streaking Aitken down the left side who took the puck and beat the LVC goalie.
The Monarchs kept the pressure on the Dutchmen in the final minutes of action but were unable to find the back of the net again. LVC scored their final goal of the night on an empty netter by Glass with 18 seconds left after the Monarchs had pulled
Emma Zeveney for an extra attacker in the final minute.
King's used their strong third period to gain a 36-30 shot advantage in the game as they outshot the Dutchmen 18-10 in the final period. King and Redden led the team with six shots each while Aitken record five.
Meghan Mietlicki and
Raeann Clancey also took five shots each for the Monarchs. Zeveney finished the game with 26 saves. The Monarchs had a great afternoon in the faceoff circle winning 34 of the 61 faceoffs in the game. King won 14 while
Tessa Schaefer-Flynn won eight. Aitken and
Kellie Munro added five wins each on eight attempts.
LVC was led by Glass with two goals and Jill Moffatt with 34 saves in goal. Olivia Cindrich had a goal and won 14 of 26 faceoff attempts.
The teams will square off against each other again tomorrow afternoon in Hershey as Lebanon Valley will look to defend their home ice at 2 p.m. in Hersheypark Arena.
