ANNVILLE, PA (March 15, 2019) -- The King's College men's lacrosse team battled with host Lebanon Valley College Friday evening, but a second-quarter run proved to be the difference as the Monarchs fell to the Dutchmen 12-8 in non-conference play from Arnold Field.
Neither team could get things going offensively early in the game, as the first two shots on cage for King's were both met by saves. The Monarchs would get on the board though following a failed clear attempt, as
Sam Moyer forced the miscue by LVC and the ensuing possession ended in an
Alec Martin goal to put King's up 1-0.
Lebanon Valley answered with two goals before sophomore
Zach Anderson potted a goal with the man-advantage with help from
Jack Camp to make it 2-2 with 5:59 to play. LVC got a Trevor Holak goal with 1:43 to go in the first quarter to send the host Dutchmen into the second period with a one-goal edge.
The second quarter started fast for the Dutchmen (2-6), who got a Josh Croyle goal 23 seconds into the stanza to take a 4-2 lead. Sophomore Gabe Vanuch tallied his first of two goals with 14:03 to play in the first half to make it a 4-3 game, but the two teams exchanged goals to make it 5-4 with 9:32 to go in the opening half.
The Dutchmen would net the next three goals over a span of 2:47 to take an 8-4 lead following another goal from Croyle. King's pulled back to within three with 2:50 to go, as
Seamus Boyle collected a free ball off a shot attempt, cleared the ball himself and set up
Jared Gambino for the tally.
It looked like the game would go into halftime with an 8-5 score line, but LVC posted a goal with a second to go in the half to make it a 9-5 lead at half for the home team. The third quarter saw the tempo slow down, as King's outscored its host 2-1 to make it a 10-7 game heading to the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter saw King's once again pull to with two of the Dutchmen at 10-7 after
Charlie Alessi's second goal fo the game, but King's would not score again as LVC tallied two goals over a 1:17 stretch to pull away for the victory.
Alessi finished with a team-high three points on two goals and an assist, adding two ground balls, while Vansuch tallied yet another multi-goal game for the Monarchs. Vansuch added four ground balls, and Gambino posted a goal and an assist along with a team-leading seven shot attempts.
Sophomore
Trevor Douenias was 10-of-20 from the face-off dot Friday, adding eight ground balls. Senior goalkeeper
Matt Basile finished with 12 saves along with seven ground balls, while long stick midfielder
Chris Surina led the way for King's with two caused turnovers.
Michael O'Brien also tallied a caused turnover, goal and two ground balls on the night.
Croyle finished with four goals and two assists to lead the Dutchmen offensively, and Joe Olives tallied a goal and three assists. Matt Torrence and Evan Crawford each posted two goals as well for LVC, while Courtland Hackel was 11-of-23 on draws. Cam Epple made 20 saves in net for the Dutchmen.
King's will return home on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. to take on the Pacers of Marywood University in McCarthy Stadium.
