Monarch Baseball Falls In Series Finale At DeSales

CENTER VALLEY, PA (March 19, 2019) – The host DeSales University Bulldogs scored all seven of their runs in the middle innings to overcome a early 3-0 deficit and defeat the King's College baseball team 7-4 on Tuesday afternoon at Weiland Park in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) series finale between the teams.

King's (4-7, 2-1 MAC Freedom) won the season series over the Bulldogs (4-8, 1-2 MAC Freedom) by virtue of their doubleheader sweep on Saturday. It marks the first time the Monarchs have won the season series over the four-time defending conference runner-up since 2011.

The Monarchs got off to a great start in the game as Matt Dobeck got hit by a pitch to lead off the game. He then stole seconds on a slow pick off move to first, moved over to third on a groundout, and then scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch. King's was very patient at the plate against a freshman pitcher. Their patience was rewarded in the second as Tyler Reynolds led off with a seven-pitch walk, Seth Laky singled to center. The Monarchs had runners on second and third with two out as Dobeck came up for the second time. The sophomore hit a ball up the middle that the Bulldog second baseman was able to stop before it reached the outfield grass. Dobeck was able to beat the throw to first for an RBI single. A couple of pitches later Andrew Steidle made it 3-0 when he scored on a passed ball.

Matt Mellinger had another quality start on the mound as kept the hosts off balance through the first three innings. In the fourth, The Bulldogs scored three runs on four hits to tie the game up. DSU looked like they would take the lead on a Michael White double to left but a Christian Pack relay throw home beat Nick White who was trying to score from first as Shane Beyer put the tag down before White was able to touch the plate.

Pack drew a four pitch walk with one out in the fifth and advanced to second on a balk. Two batters later Mellinger drove him in on hard hit single to right. In the bottom of the inning Jacob Lupas relieved Mellinger on the mound as King's hoped the sophomore would shut down the Bulldogs like he did on Saturday. DSU was able to manufacture a run as Charlie Barebo hit a sac fly to left to tie the game back up at 4. Johnny Medina came up with a big two out single to right to score two runs to give the Bulldogs their first lead of the day. Lupas got out of the inning by striking out Tommy Epsaro. The Bulldogs then added an insurance run in the sixth.

JJ Paul allowed four runs on three hits for the Bulldogs in five innings before Will Manley entered the game and held the Monarchs off the scoreboard for the final four innings to pick up his first collegiate save. Manley allowed just four hits with two walks and two strikeouts. He was also the benefactor of double plays in the seventh and eighth innings to stop Monarch rallies.

Dobeck had two hits with one run and one RBI while Mellinger had one hit and an RBI. Mellinger picked up a no decision on the mound and allowed three runs on six hits with a walk and three strikeouts in four innings. Kyle Friebolin, Laky, Beyer, and Steidle had a hit each. Friebolin threw 1.2 no hit innings after entering the game in the seventh with one out and two on.

King's will be back in action tomorrow afternoon when they host Clarks Summit University at 4 pm from Lipo Field in non-conference action.
