WILKES-BARRE, PA (March 2, 2019) – Visiting Lycoming College scored six straight goals after halftime to post an 11-8, come-from-behind win over the hosting King's College men's lacrosse team in non-conference action from Betzler Field on McCarthy Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Despite the snow throughout Friday evening, the field was just fine after the two-hour delay from a 1 p.m. to a 3 p.m. start time. The first quarter was an entertaining and back-and-forth period, as the Monarchs fell behind four minutes into the game as Drew Collins scored unassisted to give the Warriors (1-3) the early advantage.

Junior Jared Gambino would knot the game up with 8:13 to go in the first period with his fifth goal of the season, as Gambino drove to his right and stuck his shot in the bottom left corner for the tally. Less than two minutes later, Charlie Alessi forced a turnover in the defensive zone on a clear attempt, picking up the loose ball and feeding a wide-open Gabe Vansuch for a score to make it a 2-1 King's lead.

The Warriors battled back with two goals over the last 4:43 of the first quarter, as Dominick Massaro tied the game while Collins collected a man-down goal to make it a 3-2 Lycoming edge going into the second quarter. Lycoming posted an 8-6 shot lead after the first 15 minutes, as both teams were even in ground balls, face-off wins and clears.

In the second quarter, King's offense roared into action, scoring four times in the second quarter. It was the most goals in a period this season for the Monarchs, but it was the Warriors that extended their lead to 4-2 with 10:52 left in the half on an Andrew Ream goal. After Vansuch and Massaro exchanged tallies for their teams, King's would finish on a three-goal run to take the lead.

Steiger notched his first of the game midway through the second quarter, dodging to his left and firing a shot inside the right post to make it 5-4. Just 50 seconds later, senior Omar Nijmeh tallied his first of the season, attacking the short-stick midfielder with a great dodge and firing an overhand shot past the right foot of the Lycoming keeper.

Five minutes later, King's regained the lead at 6-5 as senior Nick Maher got clear with a dodge and fed Jack Camp right in front for the close-range tally to send the game into intermission with the Monarchs up.

The lead would remain for the Monarchs until 10:45 of the third quarter, as Shain Quigley started a 6-0 run for the Warriors. He would score twice more in the decisive spurt, as the Warriors finished the run at 6:45 of the fourth quarter with another Quigley tally to make it 11-6.

The Monarchs would get an acrobatic goal from Steiger with 5:15 left in the game, as he scored with 1:14 to go as well to complete the hat trick. King's had chances late but couldn't finish as Lyco held on for the win.

Steiger finished with three goals on a team-high eight shots, registering his sixth collegiate hat trick Saturday. Vansuch finished with two goals, and has now scored two or more goals in all four games for the Monarchs. Trevor Douenias was solid on face-offs, winning 11-of-21 on the day while adding four ground balls.

Defender Sheamus Boyle finished with a team-high four caused turnovers on Saturday, adding four ground balls, and Alec Martin posted five ground balls as well. Senior defender Mike McDougal tallied three ground balls and a caused turnover, while Ryan Matusiewicz also finished with four loose ball pickups in addition to a forced giveaway.

Senior Matt Basile posted nine saves in the loss, as King's (0-4) was outshot 38-23 on the afternoon. Five players scored twice for the Warriors, as Collins finished with two goals and four assists for a game-best six points. Andrew Ream and Massaro each finished with three points on two goals and an assist for the visitors. LC's Michael Tenant posted nine saves in the win.

King's will head out on the road Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. to take on Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, CT in more non-conference action.
