WILLIAMSPORT, PA (March 23, 2019) -- The host Warriors of Lycoming College scored four straight goals midway through the second half to open up a close game, using the run to earn a 16-10 victory over the King's College women's lacrosse team in non-conference play from Shangraw Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon.
King's (2-6) earned an early lead as freshman
Jen O'Connor posted the first of her three goals on the day 2:07 into the game to give the Monarchs the early lead. After a Kelly McGinniss goal from Lyco, sophomore
Mary Kate Klodarska scored on a nice shot with help from O'Connor to make it 2-1 KC.
The two teams exchanged goals over the next four tallies before Lyco posted back-to-back goals to take its first lead at 4-3. Sophomore
Emma Lehman answered to tie the game for King's, posting her second of the day unassisted at 16:20.
The Warriors posted back-to-back scores at 6-4, but Lehman completed her hat trick with another unassisted goal at 14:33. After O'Connor netted another goal for King's to make it 7-6, LC got goals from Thamina Peti and McGinniss to take the game's biggest lead at 9-6.
Just before halftime though, King's netted a very valuable man-up goal, as sophomore
Kylie McCarthy fed Klodarska for her second of the day to send the game into intermission with the score of 9-7 in favor of the hosts. The Warriors nearly potted a goal just before the break, but sophomore keeper
Orla Cottell made a strong stop.
The second half started like the first period, as King's was the first to tally with McCarthy slicing through the defense and finding the back of the net to make it 9-8. That would be the last goal for the Monarchs for over 11 minutes, as Lyco went on a 4-0 run to take a 13-8 lead.
King's stopped the run on a free position goal from
Emily Sims, but the Warriors tallied three goals on their next three possessions to make it 16-9. King's would get the ball back after another save from Cottell on LC's next possession, and O'Connor tallied with 11:23 to make it 16-10.
King's defense would stiffen down the straight, but the Monarchs couldn't make up the deficit. O'Connor totaled five points on three goals and two assists, adding three draw controls and six ground balls.
Defensively,
Jennifer Smalley led King's with two caused turnovers and a ground ball, and fellow junior
Kelly Pierce posted two draw controls and three ground balls. Cottell finished with 11 saves as well for the Monarchs.
Lehman tied her career high, posting three goals for the second time this season, while McCarthy finished with two points, four shots on goal and two ground balls. Klodarska contributed with two goals and four shots, picking up one draw control. Sims also finished with one draw control and two ground balls.
King's was barely outshot on the day, 32-25, while posting 14 clears on 18 attempts. McGinniss became the all-time leading point scorer for the Warriors Saturday, posting seven goals, five ground balls and 17 draw controls. Erika Boyer assisted on six goals, scoring twice, and Peti posted three goals as well.
King's will be back on the road on Wednesday afternoon at 5 p.m., taking on Juniata College in Huntingdon, PA in another non-conference road test for the Monarchs.
