Last Time Out: The Monarchs dropped a tough doubleheader against the Valiants of Manhattanville. MC rallied in both games to win 5-4 and 10-6. The teams will play again today in the series finale. Marywood opened AEC play by being swept by Immaculata. The Mighty Macs won by scores of 7-0 and 5-4 in Scranton. There were four home runs hit by the teams in the second game Marywood will also be in action today with a game at University of Scranton.
The Book On The Monarchs (5-9, 2-3 MAC Freedom):
- The Monarchs are second in the MAC Freedom with a team batting average of .338. Their slugging percentage of .441 is also second behind DeSales.
- Senior Christian Pack has recorded at least one hit in 12 games this year season as the senior moves up the modern era hit list at King's. He leads the team with a .426 average after getting five hits in seven at-bats against the Valiants on Sunday.
- Senior Dan Hartson has been excellent in conference play this year to raise his average to .370 on the season. He has three doubles, six RBI, and eight runs scored. Matt Mellinger is still seeing the ball well at the plate hitting .354 with four doubles. He has knocked in a team-leading 12 runs and scored eight times.
- Matt Dobeck has been great in the leadoff spot for the Monarchs recording a .404 on-base percentage and a .327 average with 17 hits, five walks, and two hit-by-pitches. Freshman Andrew Steidle is having a great start to his career out of the nine-hole as the second baseman is hitting .313 with six runs batted in and five runs scored in 32 at-bats.
- KC has a deep pitching staff this season with 16 pitchers seeing action. The group has a staff ERA of 8.45 but have pitched well since coming back to Pennsylvania from Florida. In four games in the state of Pennsylvania, King's is 3-1 and have a staff ERA of 4.00.
- Cooper Johnson had a great relief appearance against Clarks Summit last week throwing 7.2 inning of fire as the junior allowed no runs on just four hits as the Monarchs rallied for the non-conference win. Johnson could see action against the Pacers if he doesn't pitch against M'Ville today.
The Book On The Pacers (3-10, 0-2 Atlantic East):
- Marywood is currently on a four-game losing skid and have not tasted victory since a 10-0 victory over Geneva in game one of a doubleheader during the team's final day in Fort Pierce, FL for their spring break trip.
- King's is 2-1 against the Pacers over the last two years. The Monarchs won by scores of 11-1 and 15-9 while MU came away with a 12-8 victory late in the 2017 season at Lipo Field. The teams were scheduled to play last Thursday in Wilkes-Barre, but the game was postponed due to rain until April 23rd.
- D3Baseball.com First Team Preseason All-American and 2018 ABCA/Rawlings First Team All-American Jake Schuster has gotten off to a slow start at first base for the Pacers. The junior has 10 hits in 39 at-bats for a .256 average while drawing seven walks and two hit-by-pitches. He has knocked in six runs and scored six times. He had three hits in seven at-bats against IU on Sunday including a home run in game two.
- Morgan Theobald leads the team with 15 hits and a .357 batting average. The sophomore outfielder also went three-for-seven and scored one run out of the leadoff spot.
- Joseph Bruno is hitting .333 average in 11 games. The freshman shortstop has eight hits including a triple. He had two hits in both games of a sweep of Norwich down in Florida. Bubba Klein is hitting .323 with 10 hits and has four stolen bases on six attempts. Vinny D'Auria is hitting .318 and leads the team with five stolen bases on six attempts.
- As a team Marywood is hitting .247 and have stolen 16 bases on 23 attempts. They have drawn 39 walks while hitting 11 doubles, one triple, and a home run.
- The Pacers have used 15 pitchers in 13 games and have a staff ERA of 4.89. Marywood has struck out 76 batters in 92 innings but have also allowed three home runs, all to Immaculata at home on Sunday.
Up Next: King's will be back in action this weekend with a three-game MAC Freedom series against FDU-Florham. The Monarchs will travel to Madison, NJ on Friday for a 3:30 pm start before hosting the Devils for two game on Saturday beginning at 1 pm at Lipo Field.
