SCRANTON, PA (March 27, 2019) – Senior
Dan Hartson went 4-for-6 at the plate on Wednesday afternoon including the 100th hit of his career as the King's College baseball team saw their rally fall just short in a 11-10 walk-off loss at Marywood.
The Monarchs (6-10) rallied back from an early 8-2 deficit with three runs in the fifth, three runs in the sixth, and two in the ninth while holding the Pacers (4-11) to two runs. Marywood jumped on top with a big six run inning in the second on five hits to take the lead.
Matt Mellinger and
Kyle Friebolin knocked in a pair of run in the third to cut the lead to 6-2. MU responded with two more runs in the fourth before the Monarchs began their rally.
Matt Dobeck led off the inning with a single up the middle and Hartson knocked a double to right. Both runners scored on back-to-back groundouts to the left side.
Tyler Reynolds then blasted his third home run of the year over the left field fence to make it a three-run game.
After the Pacers scored a run in the bottom of the fifth, the King's bats came right back to work in the sixth as the bottom of the order led off the inning with a single by
Noah Adams, a double by
Seth Laky, and a two-RBI single to left by
Jonathan Hoyt. Dobeck followed with a single to left center and then Hartson knocked his milestone hit into left field to score Hoyt from second making it a one-run game at 9-8.
The Pacers scored a much-needed insurance run in the eight on a sacrifice fly to right field. In the ninth Adams reached base on a throwing error by the MU shortstop and then
Liam Hughes pinch ran for the catcher. Laky knocked a double to left center to put runners on second and third with no outs. Hoyt rocketed a ball up the middle that the Pacer pitcher was able to stop with his leg preventing a single and the two runs to score while securing the first out of the inning. The Pacers were not as lucky on the next batter as Dobeck drilled a double down the left field line to tie the game at 10. That was all the Monarchs were able to score that inning though.
The Pacers started the ninth with a leadoff single to left before
Alex Bruneio struck out the next two hitters. Trevor Powers singled to right to keep the inning alive and brought up Preseason All-American Jake Schuster. Schuster delivered his third hit of the game with a single up the middle to score the game-winning run.
Dobeck and Hartson finished the game with four hits each. Dobeck had two runs scored while knocking in two and Hartson had a run batted in and a run scored. Adam had two hits in big spots to start rallies while Laky added three hits and a run scored. The Monarchs had eight of their nine starters record at least one hit and they totaled a season-high 17 for the game.
King's threw six pitchers in the game as
Brandon Moffitt,
Cole Keating and
Aaron Polon shut down the Pacers for four innings while the Monarch bats went to work on the MU lead. KC struck out a season-high 12 batters as
Kyle Marinelli,
Landon La Bar, and Polon had three each. Bruneio added two and Keating had one strikeout.
King's will return to conference play on Friday when they travel to face FDU-Florham in New Jersey. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
