IMMACULATA, PA (March 27, 2019) – The visiting King's College men's lacrosse team had seven players score Wednesday, while senior goalkeeper
Matt Basile led a strong defensive effort as the Monarchs earned their second straight win with a 12-4 victory over host Immaculata University in non-conference play from Draper Walsh Stadium.
The Monarchs (2-6) showed a balanced and efficient attack throughout the game, starting 4:30 into the game on a goal from
Michael O'Brien, his first of two on the game to push the Monarchs into the lead. Nearly five minutes later, King's doubled its lead thanks to a goal from
Gabe Vansuch on a nice set-up from
Charlie Alessi.
Immaculata would tie the game on back-to-back goals, but senior
Brian Steiger tallied with 20 seconds left in the opening stanza with help from O'Brien to make it 3-2 King's heading into the second. The Steiger goal would start a 4-0 run for King's, as junior
Jared Gambino fueled the spurt with two goals and an assist to take a 6-2 lead. Steve Long of Immaculata would score with 1:20 left in the half to make it 6-3 going to the break.
After the intermission, King's turned up the defensive pressure and held the host Mighty Macs scoreless for the first 23:04 of the second half. The Monarchs outscored IU 4-0 in the third quarter, including back-to-back goals from
Alec Martin while Gambino and
Brett O'Neill followed to make it 10-3 going to the fourth.
In the final stanza, O'Brien scored on an assist from O'Neill and Martin netted his second man-up goal of the game to put the game away for the Monarchs. King's finished the game with 53 shots, which was the most since taking 53 against Lycoming College back on March 12, 2017.
On the other side, King's held Immaculata to just 26 shots while causing 25 turnovers by the Mighty Macs. Basile was strong with nine saves and the win, while
Jacob Wrede and
Sam Moyer each finished with three caused turnovers and two ground balls apiece.
Chris Surina also tallied two caused giveaways, while
Ryan Matusiewicz posted two caused turnovers and four ground balls.
The offensive unit couldn't have been as strong as it was without the solid face-off play from
Trevor Douenias, who finished 12-of-20 with a team-high 12 ground balls. Gambino was one of two players with a hat trick Wednesday, tying for the team lead with four points on three goals and an assist. O'Brien had two scores and two helpers, and Alessi finished with a goal, two assists and two caused turnovers.
Steiger had another strong game for King's with three points, adding three ground balls, and Martin finished with three goals and two loose ball pick-ups. The Monarchs were effective in the midfield on clears, getting 17 of 19 attempts into the box while also holding a 38-22 edge on ground balls. KC went 2-of-6 on the extra man Wednesday.
James Barretta had a goal and two assists to pace the Mighty Macs, while Denton States made 18 saves for IU in the loss.
King's is now off for another six days before opening Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) play next Wednesday evening, April 3 in McCarthy Stadium against the Colonels of Wilkes University.
