Monarchs Defeat Gwynedd Mercy and Grove City in Doubleheader at Fastpitch Dreams Classic

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (March 4, 2019) – After dropping in both of their games in the first day of the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic, King's College came back to clinch a 7-6 victory over Gwynedd Mercy University and 9-1 win against Grove City College.

Game One: King's 7, Gwynedd Mercy 6

It was a high scoring game as the Monarchs tallied 11 hits and Gwynedd Mercy 12 while junior Kris Kocher earned the win for King's after pitching almost three innings with zero runs on one hit, striking out two batters and just walking one. The Monarchs didn't record a single error in the game.

Junior Mackenzie Yori scored the first run of the match-up after a double to right field put her on base. A single to center field by Mindina Lieback put Yori across the plate.

In the bottom of the second, freshman Lindsey Leppo doubled on a 0-1 count to advance Marisa Mauro to home and scoring the second run for King's.

Gabriella Medina, Lieback and Gena Williams also recorded a run with Yori and Leppo contributing an additional run to push King's to seven and Gwynedd Mercy to six.

It was a quick last inning as Gwynedd Mercy struck out swinging followed by a pop fly and ground out ball to solidify the Monarch win.

Game Two: King's 9, Grove City 1

It was another win under Kocher's belt as she pitched a complete game comprised of just four hits, one run, one walk and seven strikeouts.

In the first, King's was able to post three runs. After Medina singled to right field, Lieback and Yori were able to run one in. It was then Gabby Leary with a sacrifice fly ball to center that helped reel in Kristi Ann Skok putting King's at three.

Yori slammed a double to the left and was eventually met with an out but not before advancing Leppo to home.

It wasn't until the top of the fifth that another scoring play was made for either team as Lieback tripled to left field followed by a Taylor Norris single that headed Lieback to score the fifth run of the game for the Monarchs.

Norris made her way around the bases reaching home on an error by Grove City for another run in the fifth inning.

Yori, Skok and Medina would all bring in a run in the top of the sixth as the team's defense remained impenetrable for the rest of the game.

The Monarchs finished their second game of the day with nine runs scored out of 15 hits.

King's returns to play tomorrow morning facing Penn State Abington and Eastern Mennonite University.
