Monarch Baseball Game Notes – Scranton

WILKES-BARRE, PA (April 1, 2019) – The King's College baseball team will take on local rival University of Scranton on Tuesday in a non-conference game at Volpe Field in Scranton.

Last Time Out: King's won their second conference series of the year with two wins against FDU-Florham. Scranton also won their conference series last weekend taking two-out-of-three from Catholic down in DC.
 
The Book On The Monarchs (8-11, 5-4 MAC Freedom):
  • King's continues to lead the conference with a .341 batting average which is also 14th in the nation. The Monarchs are second in the conference in slugging at .444. KC has racked up a total of 216 hits this year including 44 doubles, three triples, and five home runs.
  • Dan Hartson was named the MAC Freedom Player of the Week on Monday after batting an impressive .652 with 15 hits in 23 at-bats last week. The senior had an average of .647 in the four conference games with two doubles, three runs scored, three RBI, and four stolen bases.
  • Matt Mellinger is batting .338 this year and has come up big when the Monarchs needed him most driving in 22 runs. He had at least one RBI in the past 11 games. He knocked in seven runs against the Devils this weekend.
  • Kyle Friebolin had a great week last week and is third on the team with a .348 average. He had a career game against Manhattanville last Tuesday with three hits including his first career home run and four RBI. His most dominating performance came on the mound Friday night as he held the Devils to just one hit in four innings with four strikeouts. In 14 batters faced, only one ball left the infield.
  • The Monarchs have thrown 18 pitchers this year and have a staff ERA of 7.51. The Monarchs have relied on several guys this year with nine guys seeing action in five or more games.
  • King's and Scranton have scheduled each other every year but haven't actually been able to play since the Monarchs swept a doubleheader in 2013. The game between the two squads has been canceled due to weather each of the past five years.
The Book On The Royals (9-8, 6-2 Landmark):
  • Scranton was a win away from qualifying for the NCAA Tournament last year finishing second at the Landmark Championship to Catholic. The Cardinals defeated the Royals on the final day to win the title. Scranton got some revenge this past weekend winning two games against the Cardinals down in DC.
  • KC and Scranton have one common opponent this year in Marywood. The Royals scored a season-high 29 runs in a 29-11 victory over the Pacers last week at Volpe Field the day before MU walked-off against the Monarchs.
  • Scranton leads the Landmark with a .311 team batting average and are fourth in the nation with 2.76 doubles per game.
  • Connor Harding is 25th in the nation with a .478 batting average and has three doubles, six triples, and a home run. The sophomore outfielder has stolen five bases on six attempts while knocking in 13 runs and scoring 23.
  • Ian McIntosh is second on the team in at-bats and is batting .333 with nine doubles and a home run. The senior leads the team and is second in the Landmark with 18 RBI.
  • Kevin Haag is also hitting the ball well for the Royals with a .321 average, 16 RBI, and 16 runs scored. He leads the team and is 20th in the nation with 10 doubles.
  • Freshman Chris Wagner is batting .425 with four doubles, two home runs, 16 RBI, and 10 runs scored.
  •  Scranton has given up a lot of runs this year with a staff ERA of 8.69. They are being outscored 167-141. Their pitching staff has walked 93 batters and struck out 88 in 145 innings pitched.
 
Up Next: King's will return to MAC Freedom play this weekend with a three-game series against Delaware Valley. The Monarchs will travel down to Doylestown on Friday afternoon before hosting the Aggies for two on Saturday.
