WILKES-BARRE, PA (April 10, 2019) -- Senior
Brian Steiger posted a season-high six points and classmate
Matt Basile stayed hot with 17 saves as the King's College men's lacrosse team picked up its first Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) win of the year with 12-6 triumph over Delaware Valley University.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the early going, but Delaware Valley (5-7, 0-3 MAC Freedom) scored at 6:07 to take a 1-0 lead on a Khalil Lindsey goal. Less than a minute later, sophomore
Michael O'Brien got the scoring going for King's as he tallied off an assist from
Ryan Matusiewicz.
At the 2:20 mark of the first quarter, Steiger scored his first of four goals on the night on a nice set-up from sophomore
Gabe Vansuch, but DelVal tallied with 17 seconds to go in the opening stanza.
In the second quarter, King's scored twice over the first 10 minutes of the quarter, both coming off the stick of Steiger. The Monarch lead would grow to three at 5-2 with 4:02 left in the half, as sophomore
Gabe Vansuch tallied from Steiger. One of the biggest sequences of the game came next, as King's was whistled for a pair of penalties with 3:04 left in the half.
The man-down unit would stand strong, causing a turnover on a great stick to fend off the Aggies who had a two-man advantage. DVU would net a goal again right before the end of the period, as Dylan Brasch beat Basile on a great shot on the near post high to make it 5-3 heading to halftime.
The man-down unit continued to shine in the beginning of the third quarter, as the Monarchs turned away Delaware Valley attempt and broke quickly down the field before
Jared Gambino tallied a man-down goal on an helper from Vansuch to put King's up 6-3 at 13:40.
Over 11 minutes later, Steiger scored once again on a quick developing play as Matusiewicz fed Steiger in front, and his shot found the back of the net to send the game into the fourth with King's up 7-3.
The contest opened up in the fourth quarter, as the two teams combined for eight goals and 29 shots combined. The run continued for King's to start the fourth, as Gambino tallied off a turnover following a great play from
Chris Surina to make it 8-3.
After the teams traded the next four goals of the game to make it 10-5 King's, Matt Wiabel scored unassisted to pull the Aggies to within four with 4:34 to play. With DelVal having some momentum, King's was whistled for another penalty to give the Aggies the man-up opportunity.
On the ensuing EMO chance,
Sam Moyer intercepted a pass at the top of the zone, rumbled down field alone and his effort eventually ended up in another man-down goal for King's, this time coming from sophomore
Charlie Alessi.
The next possession for Delaware Valley ended in a save from Basile, and after a clear from King's, Alex Martin finished the scoring with his ninth goal of the year to clinch the win for the home team.
Matasiewicz finished with a career-high four points on a goal and career-best three assists. Vansuch added three points on a score and two helpers, while also picking up three ground balls. Gambino and O'Brien would each find the net twice as well for King's.
Moyer and
Mike McDougal were fantastic defensively for King's, forcing many of the shots to come from the outside on Basile. The senior netminder stopped 73.9 percent of the shots on cage Wednesday evening, allowing just six goals on 55 shots faced. The Monarch man-down unit also stunned DelVal unit into an 0-for-6 night.
Waibel and Ben Napieralski each tallied three points to lead the way for the Aggies. Gavin Yingling made seven saves in net for the visitors.
King's will look to keep its winning ways going on Saturday, traveling to Eastern University at 1 p.m. for MAC Freedom play in St. Davids, PA.
