Cottell, O'Connor Lead King's Past Delaware Valley, 15-11

DOYLESTOWN, PA (April 10, 2019) -- Freshman midfielder Jen O'Connor scored six goals and sophomore goalkeeper Orla Cottell posted 17 stops as the King's College women's lacrosse team knocked off Delaware Valley University 15-11 in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) play from Lipinksi Field.

The six goals for O'Connor were a career-high, while the freshman standout has recorded at least three or more points for the sixth game in her last seven. Cottell was equally as impressive for the Monarchs, as she came within two of her career-high in stops. The sophomore from Tinton Falls, NJ stopped a season-best 60.7 percent of the shots on cage, earning her fifth win of the year.

The two teams would exchange the first four goals of the game before sophomore Emma Lehman gave the Monarchs their first lead with 20:09 to go in the first half at 3-2. The sophomore would net her second of the day exactly five minutes later as King's would hold onto the lead for the rest of the half.

The Monarchs (5-8, 2-1 MAC Freedom) led by as many as five at 9-4 with 47 seconds left in the opening period after an O'Connor tallied but Claire Gamache scored for DelVal to make it 9-5 at the break.

Following halftime, the host Aggies (3-6, 0-3 MAC Freedom) trimmed the King's lead to 9-7 after Jaden Keefer scored with 26:41 remaining in the game. The Monarchs answered that with a Brianna Raucci goal, but from then on both teams stiffened on defense as the contest went scoreless for nearly nine minutes.

King's continued to lead but the Aggies got as close as they would in the second half with 12:14 to go, as Keefer scored on a free position shot to make it 11-10. After a timeout by the Monarchs, King's came out on fire with three goals in 2:17 capped by another O'Connor goal to give KC a 14-10 lead.

Freshman Emily Sims would put a bow on the contest with a goal with 25 seconds to go, as King's notched the conference victory. In addition to her scoring, O'Connor finished with four ground balls, two caused turnovers and five draw controls.

The balance on offense was evident Wednesday, as Mary Kate Klodarska scored three time while adding three ground balls. It marked the third hat trick of the season for the sophomore, as she now sits with 21 goals on the year.

Sims finished with two goals, a team-best five ground balls, two caused turnovers and three draw controls, while Lehman posted two caused giveaways in addition to her two tallies. Sophomore Kylie McCarthy and senior Katy Higinbothom each posted an assist, while Bailey Jordan and Raucci both scored.

Defensively, Kelly Pierce finished with three ground balls, a caused turnover and three draw controls, and Mia Dardaneli posted a ground ball and a caused turnover. King's outshot their hosts 43-34, while clearing 17 of their 22 attempts.

Samantha Collyer scored four goals, while Gamache added three goals, nine draw controls and an assist for Delaware Valley. Amanda Dietrich added 16 saves as well for the hosts.

King's will look to move to 3-1 in MAC Freedom play on Saturday, hosting Eastern University at 1 p.m. in McCarthy Stadium.
