DeSales Tops Men's Lacrosse Wednesday

WILKES-BARRE, PA (April 17, 2019) -- Visiting DeSales University scored the first seven goals Wednesday evening, using that lead to knock off the King's College men's lacrosse team 19-4 in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) play from McCarthy Stadium.

Sophomore Gabe Vansuch scored three goals to pace the Monarchs (3-10, 1-4 MAC Freedom), including a man-up goal in the second quarter to get the Monarchs on the board. Alec Martin followed with a man-up goal of his own at 9;21 of the game to make it 7-2, but DSU (14-0, 5-0 MAC Freedom) followed with the next five goals to make it 12-2 at the break.

The Bulldogs would continue to roll offensively, netting the next five goals to pull away for the win. DeSales finished the night as the lone undefeated team in Division III, as York upset No. 1 Salisbury University Wednesday evening.

Vansuch needed just three shots on goal to score his hat trick, which was his second straight game with three goals. He has netted at least one goal in all 13 games this season, as he currently leads the team with 25 goals.

Fellow sophomore Charlie Alessi set up two of the Monarch goals on Wednesday, posting two ground balls as well, while Brian Steiger and Ryan Matusiewicz each had an assist. Defender Sam Moyer finished with five ground balls and one caused turnovers, while Matusiewicz also posted three caused turnovers and four ground balls.

Senior Mike McDougal and sophomore Duncan Breig each finished with three ground balls and a caused turnover, and senior goalkeeper Matt Basile finished with 16 saves on the night. King's was 2-for-7 on extra-man chances.

Zach Bowen paced DeSales with eight points on six goals and two assists, while Tom Connors had one goal and six helpers. Joe Neggia added five goals, and Frank Krug posted 10 ground balls and seven caused turnovers. Matt Barry made nine saves in cage for DSU.

King's will have a week off before traveling to Misericordia University at 7 p.m. in MAC Freedom play from Dallas, PA.
