Jonathan Hoyt Records Career High Three Hits In Loss At Scranton

SCRANTON, PA (April 2, 2019) – King's College junior Jonathan Hoyt had a career high three hits in four at-bats at Volpe Field on Tuesday in a 10-2 non-conference loss to host University of Scranton.

The Monarchs (8-12) were able to get men on base each inning recording 11 hits and drawing five walks but struggled to drive in runs tying their season high with 13 runners left on base. King's put a man on base every inning and left at least one man on in all but the sixth inning.

Scranton (10-8) took the lead with two runs in the second inning and then used a four-run fourth to expand their lead to 6-1 after the Monarchs scored a run in the top half of the inning. They added a run in the sixth before KC scored again in the seventh. The Royals had another big inning with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to set the final score.

The Monarchs loaded the bases in the second with two outs on a Noah Adams walk, Hoyt single to left, and Sean McKee single through the left side. Royals pitcher Matt McDonald got out of the inning with no further damage as he gloved a Matt Dobeck shot right back up the middle and threw to first for the final out. The Royals scored twice in the bottom of the inning on a single, a triple, and a double. Two walks loaded the bases with one out before the Monarchs got out of the inning with a flyball to left field and then a perfectly executed relay throw home from Christian Pack at third to get the runner tagging from third.

Adams started a Monarch rally in the fourth with a one-out walk. Hoyt then knocked a ball into left for his second hit of the game before McKee reached on a fielder's choice to put runners at the corners with two outs. Dobeck came through with a big RBI single to the gap in left center. After Dobeck stole second Pack nearly beat out a grounder to second but was called out on the close play ending the inning.

The Royals responded with a big four-run inning on four hits in the bottom half to increase their lead to 6-1. The first two batters got on via a hit by pitch and a walk before a single through the right side loaded the bases. The first run scored as King's tried to turn a double play on a grounder to second base. Tyler Kirste was able to just beat the relay throw to first to earn the RBI on the play. Back-to-back singles made it 5-1 before Aaron Polon struck out Ian McIntosh for the second out of the inning. Brandon Pete singled to right to knock in the fourth run of the inning for the Royals.
King's put two on with two outs in the fifth on a Kyle Friebolin walk and a Tyler Reynolds single but were unable to score before the third out was made. Hoyt started the sixth with his third hit of the game on a single through the left side. He was thrown out trying to steal second with one out as the Royals got out of the inning with only three Monarchs batting in the inning. Scranton added an insurance run in the sixth to take a 7-1 lead.

The Monarchs got a run back in the seventh as Friebolin knocked in Hartson with a two-out single to center. The Royals responded in the bottom half with three runs on four hits to set the final score.

McKee and Reynolds had two hits each to go with Hoyt's three. Dobeck and Friebolin had an RBI hit each while Hartson and Adams scored a run each. The Monarchs threw four pitchers with Alex Bruneio getting the loss throwing 65 pitches in three innings. Aaron Polon threw 2.2 innings before Kyle Marinelli got the final out of the sixth. Landon La Bar relieved Marinelli in the seventh and pitched two no-hit innings with three strikeouts.

King's will be back in action on Friday for the beginning of the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom series with Delaware Valley University. The Monarchs will travel down to Doylestown for a 3:30 pm first pitch before hosting the Aggies on Saturday.
