WILKES-BARRE, PA (April 23, 2019) – The King's College baseball team improved to 11-2 at Lipo Field this season with a 6-2 victory over visiting Marywood University on Tuesday afternoon in Wilkes-Barre.
The Monarchs (15-16) avenged an 11-10 loss to the Pacers (5-23) earlier this season in the team's final non-conference game of the year. KC received contributions from nearly the whole lineup as eight of the nine starters had at least one hit in the game.
Marywood wasted no time swinging away in the first as four of the five batters in the inning swung at the first pitch. The Pacers scored a run with two outs as Jake Schuster hit a double into the gap in right center giving MU the early advantage. The Monarchs came right back in the bottom of the inning with three runs on four hits.
Christian Pack started the rally with a single through the left side after
Matt Dobeck flew out to the warning track in right. Pack stole second and then was driven in by
Matt Mellinger with a single to left center.
Tyler Reynolds kept the rally going with a single through the right side before
Kyle Friebolin knocked in two runs with a double over the head of the left fielder.
After a quick six-pitch inning by Friebolin on the mound in the second, King's went right back to work as
Mike Armstrong hit a leadoff double to right center and then Dobeck singled to left field and advanced to second on the throw keeping Armstrong at third. Pack knocked in Armstrong and Dobeck with a single to center giving the Monarchs a 5-1 lead.
The scored stayed at 5-1 until the fifth when
Dan Hartson hit a leadoff double down the third base line that the Pacer third baseman just missed grabbing. The senior scored three batters later when he showed great speed and hustle scoring from second on a wild pitch. MU was able to score in the seventh for the game's final run.
The Monarchs received great pitching from Friebolin,
Alex Bruneio, and
Jacob Lupas along with strong fielding.
Tyler Reynolds made a great play up the middle to start the fourth inning robbing Schuster of a hit. In the ninth, Hartson made a nice diving grab on a liner to right.
Friebolin threw just 39 pitches in four innings to pick up his fourth victory of the year and improve to 2-0 in starts this year. Bruneio struck out three and walked just one with one hit in two innings of action throwing 28 pitches. Lupas recorded his third three-inning save of the year allowing just one run on two hits with two strikeouts.
Pack led the offense with two hits, two RBI, and a run scored. Friebolin had a hit and two RBI at the plate while Dobeck, Hartson, Reynolds, and Armstrong had a hit and a run scored each. Mellinger had a hit, an RBI, and a run scored.
The Monarchs will close out the conference schedule this weekend with a three-game set with Eastern University. KC will host the Eagles on Friday at Lipo Field before traveling down to St. Davids for two games on Saturday afternoon.
