Baseball Finishes Season With 10-5 MAC Freedom Tournament Loss

WEST LAWN, PA (May 4, 2019) -- The King's College baseball team finished its 2019 season Saturday afternoon, dropping an elimination game at the 2019 Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) to Manhattanville 10-5 in play from Owls Field at Ted Palka Park.

King's (17-19) fell behind early in the game, as Manhattanville tallied five runs in the bottom of the first to take  an early lead. After the Monarchs threatened in the top of the second, the Valiants (24-17) posted two more runs in the bottom half of the second inning to take a 7-0 lead.

The Monarchs would get on the board in the top of the fifth, as Shane Beyer singled up the middle with one out to start the rally. Senior Christian Pack singled, followed by Dan Hartson reaching on a hit by pitch. With two outs and Matt Mellinger in the box, Beyer scored thanks to a balk by Luke Shaffer.

After Manhattanville responded with a run in the bottom of the sixth, King's looked to make a comeback with four runs in the seventh. Senior Mike Armstrong walked to start the frame, follwed by a free pass drawn by Beyer to put runners on first and second. Sophomore Matt Doback was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Pack singled up the middle to push Armstrong across.

Still threatening, Mellinger scored Beyer on a fly ball to right field, and senior Tyler Reynolds hammered a double to left-center field to make the score 8-5. King's nearly pulled to within two by Noah Adams line drive to center field was robbed by a diving catch to end the inning.

Manhattanville though would tack on two runs in the bottom half of the seventh to take a 10-5 lead, and the Monarchs would be unable to pull closer. The contest would be the final one for six important seniors, five of which were in the starting lineup on Saturday.

Pack, who finished his career with 194 hits, posted three more on Saturday. The Hanover, PA standout had only five games all season where he went hitless, finishing his senior season with a team-best .405 batting average.

Another senior saw his career come to an end, as Reynolds was 2-for-5 with two RBI, while Beyer posted a 2-for-3 day, scoring twice while walking once. Armstrong and Dobeck were each 1-for-3 with a walk and run scored as well for King's.

On the mound, Kyle Friebolon came on in relief and was effective, allowing just two earned runs over 4.1 innings. Sophomore Jacob Lupas also was strong for the second straight day, retiring four of the five batters he faced.

Jack Matero and Joseph Silverstri each had three hits for the Valiants, as all nine starters had at least one win in the victory.

King's finished its season 17-19, earning its fourth consecutive appearance in the MAC Freedom Tournament. The Monarchs say goodbye to seniors Pack, Reynolds, Armstrong, Sean McKee, Dan Hartson, Kyle Marinelli, along with student assistant George Casey.
