SELINSGROVE, PA (September 11, 2019) --- King's College sophomore
Tara Bender equaled her career high of 10 saves on Wednesday afternoon in a hard fought 3-0 loss to the host River Hawks of Susquehanna University from Sassafras Field in Selinsgrove.
Susquehanna (3-2-0) scored all three of their goals in a 20-minute span of the second half. Alee Pettit got the Hawks on the board late in the 53rd minute when she received a pass on the right side from Anna Werner. Pettis then snuck a shot inside the left post for the first goal of the match. In the 67th minute Katherine Ross made it a two-goal advantage with a strike to the upper left of the net from just outside the right side of the box. The River Hawks got their third goal early in the 73rd minute when Casey Grehan found the upper right of the net on a header from the right side after a long free kick into the box.
The Monarchs (2-2-0) fought hard for all 90 minutes but were unable to get past a stifling SU defense. Bender made six saves in the first half while facing 14 shots and then made four more saves in the second half on 13 shots.
The 2018 All-MAC Freedom Honorable Mention also made 10 saves last year against Wilkes on October 10.
King's will return to the pitch on Saturday night in their home opener at McCarthy Stadium when they host Albright College. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 pm under the lights.
