Monarch Men's Tennis Starts 2019-20 Season With King's Invite

WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 15, 2019) -- The King's College men's tennis team opened its 2019-20 season Saturday and Sunday in the 2019 King's Invitational, hosted at Kirby Park this weekend. The Monarchs had some solid efforts throughout the weekend, despite not winning any of the singles or doubles flights. 

At No. 1 singles, senior Tyler Millan earned a win to start things Saturday with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over CJ LaMantia of Cabrini University to move into the semifinals. Millan would run into Juan Huertas of Manhattanville College, who would defeat the Monarch top player 6-1, 6-4. Millan would battle Danny Lynn in the consolation finals, earning a highly contested 6-4, 4-6 and 10-4 win to end the weekend 2-1 in singles play. 

The No. 2 singles bracket saw Austin Mackey drop a heartbreaker in the quarterfinals, as Ryan Stellato earned the first set 6-3, but Mackey responded with a 7-6 win in the second set to force a super-tiebreaker. In the breaker, Stellato would outlast the Monarch junior 10-4 to move onto the semifinals. 

Sophomore Nick Harth played in the No. 3 singles bracket for King's, and would suffer the same fate as Mackey, dropping a three-set thriller to Drake Hanak of Arcadia University. After Hanak won the first set 6-4, Harth responded with a 6-4 win to tie the match. In the super tie-breaker, Harth and Hanak kept things very close, but a late run pushed Hanak to the 10-7 victory. 

Monarch Cameron Tuck was positioned into the play-in round at No. 4 singles, and Tuck cruised to a 6-1, 6-4 win to make it to the quarterfinals. Tuck would take on Ben Mead in the quarterfinals, falling to the Cabrini player 6-2, 6-2. 

At No. 5 singles, Jason Homschek posted a thrilling three-set victory, as he posted a 6-2 win in the first set. Conor Ryan of Susquehanna University responded with a 6-1 win in the second, but Homschek rallied in the super tiebreaker to dominate with a 10-1 win. In the No. 5 semifinals, Homschek wouldn't be able to get much going on Nathan Tauber of Scranton ina  6-0, 6-3 loss. Homschek earned a spot in the Singles No. 5 consolation finals and thrived, knocking off Michael Fishler of DeSales 6-1, 6-3. 

The No. 6 singles bracket saw Nick Holland also fall in three sets, dropping a marathon match of 6-4, 2-6 and 10-8 to Sam Sidle of Susquehanna. In doubles action, Millan and Mackey were topped in the quarterfinals round of the No. 1 doubles bracket by Nicholas Simeone and Ryan Stellato of Arcadia. 

At the No. 2 doubles bracket, Harth and Tuck knocked off Adrian Maggiani and Tauber of Scranton 8-6 to move into the semifinals. The King's duo would battle hard against Soya Goto and Dylan Crowley of Manhattanville, but were outlasted 8-5. 

The No. 3 pairs flight saw Holland and Homschek drop their quarterfinal match to Luke Thatcher and Jonathan Noble of Arcadia 8-5. 

The Monarchs are off until October 6, taking on Penn College at 10 a.m. at Kirby Park before hosting Lycoming College later that afternoon at 2 p.m. in a pair of dual match.
