RADNOR, PA (September 21, 2019) ---
Nik Verma found the upper right of the net in the 79th minute to break a 2-2 tie and give the King's College men's soccer team their sixth straight victory with a 3-2 result over the host Cabrini University Cavaliers on Edith Robb Dixon Field Saturday afternoon.
The Monarchs (6-1-0) have won all five of their road matches to start the season after rallying from an early deficit on Saturday after a penalty kick goal in the seventh minute. Cabrini (2-5-1) took advantage of a foul in the box as Andre Justin converted the first shot of the match to give the hosts the early lead.
King's came right back at the Cavs with a pair of goals in a five-minute span. The first goal in the 13th minute to even the score came off the head of
August Axtman as he found the lower right of the goal following a free kick into the box from
Quentin Szeker-Cortes. The goal was Axtman's 20th of his career and fifth of the year while the assist was Szeker-Cortes' first of the season and sixth of career. The reigning Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom Offensive Player of the Week,
Aidan DeCamillo, put KC on top in the 17th minute with a strike to the lower right. It was the sixth goal of the season for the senior and 15th of his career.
The Monarchs kept the pressure of the Cavaliers in the half not allowing a shot until Justin sent an attempt high in the 38th minute. Cabrini looked to even the score in the 43rd minute but a shot from Tyler Tomlin went off the left post as the teams headed into the break with KC leading 2-1.
The Cavaliers came out of the break strong putting a shot wide right in the opening minutes of the half. Justin would even the score in the 50th minute with his second tally of the match off an assist by Josh Cunningham. Szeker-Cortes had a free kick attempt from a little outside the box in the 55th minute that was kept out of the goal by CU keeper Anthony Zampirri as King's looked to retake the lead.
The teams battled over the next 20 minutes with shots on goal at a premium in the match. The Cavs found open space for two attempts in the 68th and 71st minutes but each time
Connor McKeown was there to keep the match knotted at two. King's broke through for what would be the game-winning goal early in the 79th minute when
Aziz Atiyeh sent a long throw into the box finding Verma who sent the ball into the upper right for his second goal of the season. The assist was the third for Atuyeh.
King's was able to withstand a late Cabrini attack as they held the Cavaliers without a shot until the final minute of play. In the last 60 seconds the hosts were able to get off three desperation shots, but none got close to the net as the Monarchs hung on for the victory.
The Monarchs took 13 shots in the match compared to 11 for Cabrini. There were just nine total shots on goal with King's recording five of them. The Monarchs also held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks taken.
Connor McKeown made two saves to pick up the win in goal for KC while his counterpart, Anthony Zampirri also made two saves.
King's will look to continue their strong play on Wednesday when they will host the Cyclones of Centenary University at McCarthy Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Wilkes-Barre.
