WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 25, 2019) --- The King's College men's soccer team used a strong second half effort to power their way to a 3-0 victory over visiting Centenary University on Wednesday afternoon on the turf of McCarthy Stadium in Wilkes-Barre.
The victory was the seventh straight for King's (7-1-0) after a tough overtime loss to Scranton to begin the season. Centenary fell to 1-9-0 with the defeat.
The Monarchs got on the board early with the first shot of the match in the seventh minute as
Aidan Oyler found the bottom right from nearly 35 yards out for his first career goal. Oyler looked to double to Monarch advantage a couple minutes later but his attempt sailed right of the net. The Monarch defense held the Cyclones to just two shots in the first 45 minutes with keeper
Connor McKeown needed just for one save on a ball right at him in the center of the net. However, the offense struggled to find space as the Cyclones held KC to just one more shot the rest of the half.
King's came out in the second half and Oyler had two attempts go wide left in the first five minutes of action.
Pat Holton just missed doubling the Monarch lead when his shot hit off the crossbar and right down into the Cyclone keeper's hand for a save. The Monarchs broke through the CU defense for two quick goals in the 61st minute.
Quentin Szeker-Cortes sent a ball into the right side of the box where
Michael Scardelletti headed it back to the left side to
August Axtman for the senior defender's sixth goal of the year. Szeker-Cortes and Scardelletti each recorded their second assist of the season on the play. Just 11 seconds later
Kyle Shalvey, who had entered the pitch following the goal, intercepted a pass and scored his first career goal to make it 3-0.
The Monarchs outshot the Cyclones 11-1 in the second half with CU's only attempt being blocked by the Monarch defense. King's also took eight corner kicks in the half to finish with nine for the match. King's dominated time of possession in the match 61%-39%. McKeown improved to 4-1-0 in goal on the season while
Joey Lindsay saw just over 13 minutes of time in relief. Will Hodic made two saves in net for the Cyclones.
King's will be back in action on Saturday when they face Arcadia University at 1 pm from Jean Lenox West Field in Glenside. It will mark the last non-conference battle between the programs before the Knights move over to the MAC Freedom from the MAC Commonwealth next year.
