Monarchs Drop First Match Of The Year As Araujo Scores Second Career Goal

MAHWAH, NJ (September 4, 2019) --- Junior Bekah Araujo scored her second career goal in the eighth minute but host Ramapo College rallied with a goal in each half to hand the King's College women's soccer team their first loss of the year on Wednesday afternoon in Mahwah, NJ.

The Monarchs (1-1-0) came out strong earning an early corner as Araujo had the ball kicked away from her following a great pass down the right side from Alyssa Macher. The corner kick from Breanna Jacinto found Lauren Geiger with a clean look at the net from the top of the box but her kick just sailed wide right. The Monarchs kept the pressure on and were able to manufacture three more corner kicks in the next couple of minutes but each time the Ramapo (2-1-0) defenders were able to knock the ball away from the net.

The match went into a weather delay a little over seven minutes in. Coming directly out of the delay Breanna Jacinto sent a free kick from just inside the midfield line into the box where Kristina Keithley headed the ball to Araujo. The junior collected the ball and sent it into the lower right giving the Monarchs the 1-0 lead. The assist for Keithley was the first point of the freshman's career while Araujo scored her first goal since October 24, 2017 against Neumann.

Neither team was able to build up any strong offensive opportunities over the next 15 minutes as both defenses picked up the pressure. The Roadrunner were able to even the score at one with 16:54 left in the half when they capitalized on their first corner kick of the match. Gianna Enea sent a ball into the box from the right corner that Kaitlyn Kelly was able to get a head on and send into the upper left corner for the hosts. Ramapo nearly took the lead with a little bit over a minute left on another corner kick by Enea but this time Monarch keeper Tara Bender made a big save on a shot by Carlo Goodwin.

The Monarchs had their chances to score in the second half but were unfortunately unable to find the back of the net. In the opening minutes of the half KC drew a foul right outside the box on the right side. The direct kick from Sophia Sacknievich was saved by the RC keeper before a second attempt from outside the box sailed wide left. Jacinto had a great look at the goal with a little over 35 minutes left but her shot was saved. Keithley found herself open on the left side with just under 20 minutes left as King's pushed the ball upfield following a save at the other end. However, her attempt from the top of the box sailed high and left of the goal. King's had an excellent chance a couple minutes later when a pass up the middle of the field found Emily Harrington streaking between two defenders with just another defender to beat. She was able to find space for a shot, but her attempt went wide right.

Ramapo scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with 14 minutes remaining when Paige Siegel one-timed passes from Goodwin and Kaelyn Angelucci into the upper left. Siegel's shot from the middle of the box came after a pair of centering passes from her teammates. The Monarchs pressed to even the score back up following the goal but Ramapo held on for the victory allowing just a Grace Conover shot on goal that was saved in the final 14 minutes.

The Roadrunners held a 13-9 shot advantage putting 10 of their shots on goal compared to just four shots on goal for King's. The Monarch did have an advantage in corner kick earning eight, seven in the first half, to just five for Ramapo.

The Monarchs will look to bounce back from the tough loss on Saturday with their third away match of the season. King's will travel out to Huntington, PA for what has become an annual match with Juniata College. Kickoff from Gibbell Stadium is scheduled for 4:30 pm. King's has played Juniata every year since 2011 and has won three of the last four meetings with the Eagles.
