Monarchs Fall To Colonels on Goal With 7.6 Seconds Left

WILKES-BARRE, PA (January 11, 2020) --- The host Wilkes University Colonel women's hockey team rallied from a two-goal deficit in the third period to defeat King's College 3-2 on Saturday afternoon from the Toyota Sportsplex in Wilkes-Barre.

The Colonels scored the game-winning goal with just 7.6 seconds left as Shauna Tubbs recorded her third goal of the season. All three of Wilkes' goal came in the final period as they took advantage of five King's penalties to outshoot the Monarchs 19-7 in the period. The first goal was scored 6:28 into the period as Ashley Murry light the lamp for the first time this season. At 14:23 Abigail Barcless tied the game up at two with her first goal of the season as Wilkes scored playing two women up.

The teams played evenly to start the game as WU held a slim 10-7 shot advantage after a scoreless first period. In the second period the Monarchs started to enforce their will outshooting the Colonels 10-5 in the period. Mary Deyell put the Monarchs on the board with her first goal of the season and fourth of her career at 14:40 of the second period. A couple minutes later KC increased their lead to 2-0 with a goal by Kateri Heitaus assisted by Erin King. The goal was the first of Heitaus' career while King had her second assist of the season and fifth of her career. Both goals for the Monarchs were power play goals.

King led the team with six shots on goal while Morgan Almon had four. Josée Aitken had three shots and won 11 of 19 faceoffs. Tessa Schaefer-Flynn won 11 of her 16 faceoffs and recorded two shots. Emma Zeveney made 31 saves in goal including 16 in the third period.

King's will be back in action tomorrow with their first home game of 2020. The Monarchs will host Stevenson University at 5 pm from the Revolution Ice Centre in Pittston.
