ASTON, PA (January 17, 2020) ---
Maggie Gould scored her first goal of the season as the King's College women's ice hockey team fell to host Neumann University 5-1 on Friday afternoon from the IceWorks Skating Complex in Aston.
The Knights scored their first goal 3:16 into the games as Mollie Johnson picked up her own rebound off a blocked shot and lite the lamp for a power play goal. Taylor Cullen increased the lead to 2-0 with her first goal of the year nearly midway through the period. Neumann outshot the Monarchs 11-2 over the first 20 minutes as KC struggled with three penalties.
The second period started out great for the Monarchs as Gould found the back of the net 91 seconds into the period off assists by
Alexa Kovaly and
Tessa Schaefer-Flynn. The goal was the fifth of Gould's career and first point of the season while Kovaly recorded her first collegiate point. The assist for Schaefer-Flynn was her third of the year and career.
The Knights responded with a pair of goals by Jeannie Padden to increase their lead to 4-1 going into the second intermission. Padden's second goal was a short-handed breakaway attempt with just under 9 minutes to go in the period. The Knights scored their final goal with 4:18 to go as Katelyn Brown scored off the third assist of the game by Claudia Trionfo.
King's had 20 shots in the game as Josee Aitken,
Meghan Mietlicki,
Alyssa Cussatt,
Caitlin Redden, and
Emma Knoll all took three each. Aitken won a team-best 13 faceoffs on 23 attempts while Mietlicki blocked seven of the team's 14 blocked shots.
Kiva Sierra Stoltz made 41 saves in goal including 23 in the third period.
The Monarchs struggled with penalties in the game being called for six but were much better on the penalty kill allowing just one goal on the six opportunities.
KC will return to the ice tomorrow afternoon with a 12 pm puck drop in Rye, NY at the Playland Ice Casino against Manhattanville College.
