WILKES-BARRE, PA (January 22, 2020) -- The King's College wrestling team hosted SUNY Oneonta Wednesday evening in its first home dual match of the season, but the Monarchs got behind early and couldn't recover in falling 42-6 in action from McGrane Gymnasium.
The Monarchs (1-7) fell behind early due to a forfeit at 125, and then saw senior
Dakota Quick topped at 2:45 of the first period by pin to trail 12-0 after 133. Senior Ahken Chu of Oneonta would need just 1:45 to pick up a technical fall win over junior
James Maloy, and Oneonta's Tyler Brazinski earned a pin at 4:09 over King's
Robert Zelinski at 149.
At 157, Eric Brach defeated freshman
Colby Spencer 9-2 despite some solid work from the King's newcomer who was wrestling up a weight class. King's sophomore
Kade Kravits ground out another win at 165, not allowing Thomas Marrone to get much offensively while earning a 4-0 decision win to get King's on the scoreboard.
The momentum for King's continued at 174 for the Monarchs, as Issac Mensah was able to pick up a 5-2 decision victory thanks to a strong riding time edge. The run would end there for the Monarchs, as the experience for the Red Dragons (9-4) showed at the heavier weights.
Oneonta's Steven Bilali worked quick at 184, getting King's freshman
Joe Davis on the mat early before turning him for a pin at 1:58 of the match. The Red Dragons earned another pin at 197, as Will Grace was wrestling up a weight class and was bested by Jhordyn Innocent by fall at 2:05.
The final match of the evening saw King's
David White battle Jake Pine, as both competitors worked up a weight class at 285. Pine led 3-0 after the first period, but a big second period plus riding time gave him a 10-1 major decision win over White to end the match.
The Monarchs will return to the mat in McGrane Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon, hosting Lycoming College for a dual match at 1 p.m. in Wilkes-Barre, PA.
