READING, PA (January 24, 2020) --- Freshman
Kateri Heithaus scored what proved to be the game-winning goal 9:14 into the second period to give the King's College women's ice hockey team a 3-2 victory over host Alvernia University on Friday evening from the Body Zone Sports Complex in Reading.
The victory was the Monarchs' (2-12-1, 1-7-0 UCHC, 1-3-0 MAC) first ever United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) and Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) victory. The win was also King's second of the season at Alvernia (4-12-0, 0-8-0 UCHC, 1-3-0 MAC) having previously beaten the Golden Wolves 4-2 on the second day of the Keystone Holiday Classic back in December.
The first four goals of the game were scored on power plays with the teams trading goals.
Maggie Gould got the Monarchs on the board first with her second of the year and sixth career goal 4:31 into the game. The Golden Wolves equaled the score back up as Abby Reisinger found the back of the net at the 10:25 mark off KC's first penalty. That tie was short lived as King's went two-for-two on the power play in the first period with
Caitlin Redden lighting the lamp for her team-leading fifth time this season.
Meghan Mietlicki and
Josée Aitken recorded assists on the goal. The assist for Mietlicki was her third of the year and seventh of her career. Aitken recorded her fifth point of the year on her second assist.
In the second period Alvernia managed to even the game back up as Olivia Gilida scored at the 6:13 mark. Three minutes later Heithaus gave the Monarchs back the lead with the eventual game-winner off nice passing from
Raeann Clancey and Mietlicki. The goal was the second of the freshman's career while Clancey recorded her first assist of the year and fourth of her career.
"We competed for a full 60 minutes and outworked them," stated head coach Brice Baricevic about the win. "All three forward lines were getting in the mix and every player on the team contributed. I'm really proud of Zev (
Emma Zeveney) on getting her first win as a college goalie. She's faced a ton of adversity and deserves it."
Zeveney made 21 saves in goal including 10 in the first period. The Monarchs allowed a season low 23 shots and outshot their opponent for the first time this year with 27 shots. Redden lead the team with six while Aitken had five. Clancey and Mietlicki each had four shots.
The Monarchs will look to make it two in a row tomorrow evening with another UCHC and MAC matchup at Stevenson University. Puck drop will be at 7 pm from the Reisterstown Sportsplex in Reisterstown, MD.
