WILKES-BARRE, PA (January 25, 2020) -- Five Monarchs recorded double figures this afternoon as they cruised to their third-straight Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) win as they defeated the Delaware University Aggies, 74-58, in McGrane Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.
Delaware Valley struck first on the opening possession before King's (10-7, 3-3 MAC Freedom) scored the next seven to take a 7-2 lead. The Aggies took the lead, 8-7, off a layup by Damian Washington, before the Monarch offense ignited to build a 17-point lead over the next 8:33 of action and led by as much as 20 points (26-16) in the opening half before holding the 16-point advantage, 36-20, heading into the halftime break.
King's carried their first-half momentum as their lead swelled to as much as 26 off a jumper by senior
Andrew Hudak with 13:31 to play. Delaware Valley battled as they closed within 17 off a free throw by Washington with 7:37 left, but the Monarchs responded with a 12-2 run to build their largest lead of the game, 71-44, with 3:35 left. The final minutes of the game saw the Aggies try to climb back from the deficit, but it was too late as King's recorded the win, 74-58.
Sophomore
Jake Pawliczak led the offense, coming up just shy of a double-double with 19 points and nine rebounds, shooting 9-for-10 from the field. Freshman
Tyler Faux connected for four three's to total 14 points, while senior
Andrew Hudak also came up just short of a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds, adding four assists. To round out the Monarch offense were sophomore
Kevin Hunter and senior
Joe Lonardi with 13 and 10 points, respectively. In addition, senior
Josh Bailey dished out a game-high seven assists, and sophomore
Patrick Galvin totaled seven boards and three steals.
Jordan Tucker led the Aggies (5-11, 1-5 MAC Freedom) with 14 points and four steals. Washington totaled 12 points and eight rebounds, and Edward Jones totaled three assists.
As a team, King's shot 43.9 percent (29-66) compared to Delaware Valley's 41.1 percent (23-56). The Monarchs also shared the ball well with 20 assists on their 29 field goals. They won the battle on the boards this afternoon, holding a 40-35 advantage over the Aggies. King's also forced 21 Delaware Valley turnovers, recording six steals.
The Monarchs are on the road for the next week, traveling up the mountain to Misericordia on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. before heading down the turnpike to take on DeSales on Saturday.
