Monarch Women Compete At NYC Invitational

NEW YORK CITY (January 31, 2020) --- The King's College women's indoor track and field team had another great performance on Friday afternoon as the squad competed in the NYC Division III Invitational at the New Balance Track and Field Center at The Armory in New York City.

King's scored 3.25 points to finish 25th of 28 scoring teams. Johns Hopkins scored the most points with 122 while Middlebury was second with 48. The Middle Atlantic Conference held the next three spots as Stevens Insitute of Technology was third with 46 points, Eastern was fourth with 43 points, and Messiah rounded out the top five with 42 points.

On The Track
60 Meters
Both Monarchs competing were in the unseeded heats as Angelina Broga fourth in the first of six heats with a time of 8.70 seconds. The freshman just missed the MAC qualifying time of 8.64 seconds while finishing fifth overall out of 34 sprinters in the unseeded heats. Sophomore Madde Wnukowski ran in the second heat and finished second in the heat with a career best 8.72 seconds to finish seventh overall. City College of New York freshman Chidinma had the best time of the day in the first heat running 8.54 seconds. Elizabethtown freshman Sydney Detky was second in 8.56 seconds while Eastern freshman Alyse Hand finished third in 8.59 seconds. The top three times were all in the first heat with Broga. NJCU freshman Xarial Chandler won the second heat in 8.68 seconds to finish fourth overall.
 
200 Meters
Angelina Broga ran 28.57 seconds to finish third in the 11th of 19 heats. Messiah junior Julia Geisheimer won the heat in 27.89 seconds. Sarah Zultevicz had a time of 29.14 seconds to finish third in the 10th heat that was won by Messiah sophomore Ellie Longshaw in 27.69 seconds. Madde Wnukowski was fifth in the eighth heat finishing in a season best 29.18 seconds. Staten Island freshman won her heat in 26.50 seconds. The top three times were run in the first heat as CCNY junior Avery Maillet won in a meet record 25.42 seconds. NYU freshman Isre'al Conerly was second in 25.51 seconds while Stevens freshman Laura Mathews was third in 25.84 seconds.
 
400 Meters
Kailey Orzechowski ran a career best time of 1:03.49 to win the seventh of 12 heats. The junior ran the fourth fastest time in program history while finishing 26th overall out of 63 runners. Stevens senior Gina Dello Russo ran 57.68 seconds in the first heat to win with a meet record. Mount Union freshman Micah Donley was second overall while winning the second heat in 59.02 seconds. Her junior teammate Cortni Arp was second in the first heat and third overall with a time of 59.09 seconds.
 
800 Meters
Beth Albright finished fourth in the fourth of eight heats with a career best time of 2:30.93. She finished 26th overall out of 65 runners and her time is the third fastest in program history. Rutgers-Newark sophomore Sara Manning won the heat in 2:26.59. The top three times came in the first heat as Messiah sophomore Esher Seeland won in a meet record time of 2:12.02. Middlebury senior Meg Wilson was second in 2:16.40 while Mount Union senior Sarah Mason was third in 2:16.53.
 
Mile
Kelsie Canessa ran a time of 6:26.76 in her season debut. The junior ran in the fourth of five heat which was won by Southern Virginia freshman Tayma Vanek in 5:41.15. Messiah senior Leanne Weaver broke five minutes with a meet record 4:58.16 to win the first heat. Sophomore Cassidy Kearney of Middlebury was second in 5:00.38 while Johns Hopkins senior Felicia Koerner was third in 5:00.63.
 
60 Meter Hurdles
Kristine Krumpfer had a time of 10.49 seconds to finish 18th of 35 overall hurdlers. He was fifth in the fourth and final preliminary heat. Johns Hopkins junior Annie Gutierrez won the heat in 9.15 seconds (9.146) which was the second fastest time in prelims. Laura Mathews of Stevens had the top time of 9.15 seconds (9.144) to win the third heat. Mathews then won the final in a meet record 8.95 seconds beating Bryn Mawr junior Jennica Terry who crossed the line in 9.11 seconds. Gutierrez was third in 9.21 seconds.
 
4X400 Meter Relay
The Monarch team of Angelina Broga, Beth Albright, Madde Wnukowski, and Kailey Orzechowski finished ninth out of 14 teams with a time of 4:25.69. That time is the third fastest in program history as the squad finished second in the third of three heat to Catholic who crossed the line in 4:19.99. Messiah had the fastest time in the field running a meet record 3:54.12. Mount Union was second in 3:55.81 while Rutgers-Newark was third in 4:02.62.
 
Field Events
High Jump
Sarah Zultevicz finished in a four-way tie for eighth out of 16 jumpers with a height of 1.45 meters (4'9"). She cleared 1.45 meters on her first attempt but was unable to clear 1.50 meters on her three tries. Seven different jumpers managed to clear 1.50 meters (4'11") but no one was able to do any better in the competition. Muhlenberg junior finished first in the tie breaker while Misericordia freshman Le'June Berry was second and Middlebury freshman Grace Desmond was third.
  
Triple Jump
Gabriella Conforti finished sixth out of 28 jumpers with a mark of 10.45 meters (34'3.5") on her third attempt. After fouling of her first she hit marks of 10.30 meters, 10.45 meters, 9.99 meters, 10.41 meters, and 10.21 meters. Kristine Krumpfer had a mark of 10.01 meters (32'10.25") on her first jump to finish 14th. The freshman jumped 9.70 meters and 9.31 meters on her other two attempts. Eastern senior Nicole Weenink won with a mark of 11.55 meters (37'10.75") on her sixth jump while CCNY senior Lucy Piacentini was second at 11.01 meters (36'1.5") on her first attempt. JHU sophomore Cherease Lamm was third with a mark of 10.81 meters (35'5.75") on her fourth attempt.
 
Shot Put
Danielle Kitchner threw 9.24 meters (30'3.75") on her third attempt to finish 24th of 32 throwers. The sophomore fouled on her first attempt and then hit 8.91 meters on her second toss. Misericordia sophomore Brenna Karnish won with a mark of 12.72 meters (41'8.75") on her sixth throw. Montclair State senior Christine Griffith was second with a toss of 11.91 meters (39'1") on her first attempt. Rutgers-Newark senior Ledena Baytops was third with a mark of 11.14 meters (36'6.75") on her fifth attempt.
 
 King's will be back in action next Friday when they travel back to the five boroughs to compete at Ocean Breeze on Staten Island in the University at Albany Invitational.
