Galvin's Basket Lifts Monarchs Over Wilkes on Senior Day

WILKES-BARRE, PA (February 15, 2020) -- Sophomore Patrick Galvin came off of senior Andrew Hudak's screen, stepped back, and hit a jumper from the foul line with 3.4 seconds remaining to lift the King's College Monarchs over cross-town rival Wilkes University, 73-71, on Saturday afternoon in McGrane Gymnasium. Wilkes had an opportunity to send the game to overtime with 2.2 seconds left, but the Colonels could not connect from the free throw line as junior Pat Mitchell secured the rebound for the win in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) play.

The Monarchs came out with the early 5-0 lead before the Colonels answered with 14 straight points to take the 14-5 lead with 13:35 to go in the opening half. King's responded with a 16-7 run behind nine points on three threes from sophomore JJ Glinsky to tie the game at 21 with 8:18 left in the half. The teams traded baskets over the next 4:04 of play with Wilkes leading by five, 33-28, before a scoring drought hit for the next 1:45 before a free throw by sophomore Kevin Hunter resumed the offenses. A Wilkes layup and three points by Mitchell ended the half with the Colonels leading, 35-32.

Six points by Galvin to start the half tied the game at 39 with 17:05 to play in regulation, and a three by senior Josh Bailey gave the Monarchs their first lead since they led 5-0 early. King's continued to connect offensively, building a nine-point advantage off a three by freshman Tyler Faux with 10:39 to play, but Wilkes responded to score the next six points to inch within three, 57-54. As expected, neither team could put this game away after building a lead as the action saw both teams trade baskets with the scoreboard reading in favor of the Colonels, 67-66, with 3:33 remaining.

The King's offense began to push the ball into the paint through Hudak who got fouled and connected for three free throws to build the Monarchs lead, 69-67, with 2:18 on the clock. Wilkes tied the game at 69 off a pair of free throws by Mark Mullins, but a second-chance opportunity for the Monarchs paid off as Bailey connected for a basket with 48 seconds left to give King's the lead, 71-69. On the next Colonels possession, Drake Marshall missed a three-point opportunity, but Wilkes regained possession with an offensive rebound and called a timeout with 28 seconds to play.

Out of the timeout, Rob Pecorelli found Jake Robel for a layup to tie the game at 71, and King's called a timeout after the basket as the game clock had 14 seconds left. Bailey handed the ball off to Galvin out of the break, and the guard came off of Hudak's screen to connect on a step-back jump shot to give the Monarchs the lead for good, 73-71, with 3.4 seconds remaining. Wilkes gave one last effort as Galvin fouled on the inbounds pass to put Robel on the foul line, but he could not hit either as Mitchell secure the board and the win for the Monarchs.

Faux led King's (13-10, 6-6 MAC Freedom) with 15 points off five threes, adding two steals. Bailey filled the stat sheet on his senior day, totaling 13 points, seven assists, and six rebounds, while Galvin recorded 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Glinsky came off the bench as the other Monarch in double figures, adding 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting, including 3-of-7 from three. Senior Andrew Hudak also put in a stat-filling effort, totaling nine points, nine rebounds, and three assists, while fellow-senior Joe Lonardi added eight points and two steals.

Wilkes (10-13, 3-9 MAC Freedom) was led by Pecorelli with a game-high 23 points, adding seven rebounds and seven assists. Mullins recorded 17 points with seven boards, and Marshall added 12 points, seven rebounds, and five steals in the loss. Robel also added to the rebounding effort with seven boards.

King's shot an impressive 43.3 percent (26-60) from the field and 36.7 percent (11-30) from three while holding Wilkes to just 17.4 percent (4-23) from beyond the arc. They also forced 18 Colonels turnovers, committing seven steals, and they dished out 15 assists on 26 field goals. As a team, the Monarchs held the advantage in points from turnovers (17-16), fast break points (14-8), and bench points (15-14).

The Monarchs are back in action as they host Misericordia University on Tuesday in their final regular-season home contest with a 6:00 p.m. start time in McGrane Gymnasium.
