ROCHESTER, NY (February 15, 2020) – The King's College women's ice hockey team played through another contest short-handed due to injuries, but still battled with one of the best teams in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) before falling to Nazareth College 6-0 in action from Bill Gray's Iceplex.
In the first period, Nazareth (17-3-3, 11-1-2 UCHC) took the lead 7:55 into the game, as Hailey Redders potted her 15th goal of the season with help from Abbey Luth and Gabriella DeMeo to make it 1-0. The Monarchs would have their best shot in the opening period just before intermission, but
Caitlin Redden's short-handed attempt was saed by Adrianna Brehm of Naz.
Moments later, the Golden Flyers came down and doubled their lead to 2-0 on the power play thanks to a Makenna Wiljanen tally off assists from Luth and Keeley Rose. Just 41 seconds later, Nazareth tacked on another just before the first intermission as Luth posted her third point of the game as she scored off of a Madison Nichols pass to make it 3-0.
The Monarchs (2-20-1, 1-14 UCHC) got their first power play of the game in the second period, but couldn't capitalize and Nazareth scored right after getting to even strength at 6:18 as Nichols tucked home her 12th of the year on assists from Luth and Rose. That's where the game would stand going into the second intermission, though King's nearly got a goal of its own late in the period as
Morgan Almon's attempt was saved with less than a minute to go.
Through two periods, King's goalkeeper
Emma Zeveney had 30 saves while junior Josee Aitkin was the Monarch leader in shots with two. In the third, Nazareth would increase its lead to 5-0 as Wiljanen scored unassisted for her 12th of the season. With just under five minutes to play, the Golden Flyers took advantage of a 5-on-3 advantage, as Kyla Thompson tucked home a rebound to make it 6-0 which ended up being the final score line.
King's was outshot for the contest 58-6, as Zeveney made 52 saves on the contest which was the second-most this year for the junior netminder, bested only by the 69 at Elmira College back in November. King's was 0-for-3 with the extra person Saturday, while Naz was 2-of-6 as the Monarchs were whistled for seven penalties for 14 minutes.
The Monarchs will be back at home February 21, Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m., taking on local rival Wilkes University in the final home game of the 2019-20 contest at the Revolution Ice Center in Pittston, PA in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) and UCHC action.
