PITTSTON, PA (February 21, 2020) ---
Caitlin Redden potted two goals for the second time this season as the King's College women's ice hockey team finished off their 2019-20 home slate with a 4-2 loss against Wilkes University at Revolution Ice Centre in Pittston on Friday afternoon.
The junior gave the Monarchs an early lead as she scored her second short-handed goal of the year knocking in a rebound off a shot by
Mary Deyell on a breakaway attempt just 2:43 into the game. Deyell picked up the loose puck on the right side of the ice and took her shot that bounced off the goalie's pads right to a charging Redden on the left side who lit the lamp for the sixth time this year.
Wilkes responded with two goals in a span of nine seconds midway through the period to take the lead. The first goal came from Kendall Castro and she used fancy stick work to elude the Monarchs defense before sneaking a shot into the back of the net for her fifth of the season. The Colonels won the following faceoff and Abigail Barcless took the puck inside the blue line before setting up Ashley Murry for a one-timer from the point for her third of the season.
King's came back in the second period and put a lot of pressure on the Colonel defense and goaltender Ally Joly. The Monarchs had a 15-9 shot advantage in the period as Joly stopped all 15 shots she faced. The Colonels added to their lead in the final minute of the period as Erica Sheaffer found the back of the net after her initial shot was blocked by
Raeann Clancey. Julie Patterson gave the Colonels a 4-1 lead with her fourth goal of the season 9:18 into the third period. Redden cut the lead down to 4-2 as she tallied her team-leading seventh goal of the season off her own rebound.
Josée Aitken won the faceoff leading to the goal and was rewarded with her fourth assist of the year.
The Monarchs held the shot advantage through two periods, but the Colonels outshot the short-handed Monarchs 12-2 in the third period to finish the game with a 30-27 advantage. The teams combined for 13 penalties in the game with neither team being able to score on 10 power play opportunities. Deyell recorded her 10th career assist while Redden's first goal was the 10th of her career.
Kiva Sierra Stoltz made 26 saves in net for the Monarchs. Aitken was excellent in the faceoff circle winning 25 of her 34 attempts. Clancey blocked a team-high five shots to bring her season total to 78 heading into the final game of the season tomorrow.
Morgan Almon and
Meghan Mietlicki blocked four shots each as KC totaled 23 as a team.
King's will close out the season tomorrow afternoon as they go for a season sweep of Alvernia University down in Reading, PA. The Monarchs defeated the Golden Wolves in both previous meetings this season. Puck drop is scheduled for 2 pm from the Body Zone Sports and Wellness Complex.
