HOBOKEN, NJ (February 22, 2020) -- The King's College men's basketball team battled hard in their final regular-season game of the year, hoping to capture the final spot in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) tournament, but the Monarchs fell to the host Stevens Institute of Technology, 82-68. With the FDU-Florham win over Wilkes University, King's comes up just shy of a post-season berth.
The early part of the game saw both teams struggle offensively, as King's trailed 15-4 with 13 minutes to play in the opening half. Stevens then went on a 13-7 run over the next 5:35 of action as they led the Monarchs, 28-18. A pair of free throws by sophomore
Patrick Galvin cut the Stevens deficit to five with 2:14 to play in the half, and both teams traded baskets to post the half time score, 36-29, with the Ducks leading at the break.
King's battled to within four, 41-37, to start the half off a three by sophomore
JJ Glinsky, with 15:51 to play, but Stevens connected for three straight threes to rebuild their lead, 50-37. The Monarchs inched within single digits again, 56-49, on a three by freshman
Sean Murphy with 9:20 left in the half before the Ducks used their offensive power to hold an 18-point advantage, 76-58, with 4:01 left on the game clock. The Monarchs could not recover as they posted the heartbreaking final, 82-68, on the road.
Senior
Andrew Hudak led the Monarchs in his final game in a King's uniform with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting, adding a team-high nine rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Glinsky came off the bench to total 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including 4-of-8 from beyond the arc, with two assists. Galvin rounded out the Monarchs offensive efforts with 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting with six boards and three assists. In addition, Murphy came off the bench to corral six rebounds and total two steals.
Stevens (21-4, 12-2 MAC Freedom) was led by Spencer Cook and Kevin Florio with 17 points each, as Michael Zignorski added 16 and JoJo Mosca added 11. Dylan Walsh led with seven boards, Mosca led with three steals, and Cook and Zignorski led with four assists a piece.
King's (13-12, 6-8 MAC Freedom) shot an impressive 41.8 percent (23-55) from the floor and 30.0 percent (9-30) from three, but it was no match to Stevens' 49.2 percent (32-65) from the floor and 44.4 percent (12-27) from three. The Monarchs forced 14 Ducks turnovers and totaled 32 team rebounds in the loss. Inside the box score, King's held the advantage in points from turnovers (19-18), second chance points (7-6), and bench points (31-26).
