WILKES-BARRE, PA (February 8, 2020) -- A 48-42 second half offensive surge that saw the King's College Monarchs shoot 52.8 percent from the floor fell just short as the Monarchs dropped the Middle Atlantic Freedom (MAC Freedom) contest to the visiting Devils of FDU-Florham, 92-83, on Saturday afternoon in McGrane Gymnasium.
FDU opened the game on a 9-0 run before King's responded with seven straight points to pull within two, 9-7. The Devils answered with a 16-10 run to hold a 10-point advantage, 27-17, with 11:10, before building the largest Monarch deficit of the game, 41-22, with 8:02 left in the opening half. The two teams went scoreless over the next 2:07 of action before a layup by senior
Andrew Hudak broke the scoring drought and sparked a 13-9 King's run over the final stretch of the half to post the halftime score, 50-35.
King's pulled within single digits, 52-43, with 18:02 to go off a three by sophomore
JJ Glinsky, but the teams traded baskets over the next 4:18 with the Devils on top, 67-48. The Monarchs scored the next six points behind four points by senior
Joe Lonardi, but the Devils answered with four straight of their own. King's answered and climbed their way back within nine, 80-71, off a transition jumper by Glinsky with 4:13 on the game clock, but seven unanswered points from FDU rebuilt their lead, 87-71, as there was just 2:47 to play.
The Monarchs rallied to pull within six on a four-point play by Glinsky with 47 ticks left on the game clock, forcing King's to foul. Over the final stretch, FDU could only connect for 3-of-6 from the foul line, but each offensive attempt by the Monarchs came up short, handing King's the conference loss, 92-83.
King's (11-10, 4-6 MAC Freedom) was led by four in double figures, behind a stellar all-around performance from sophomore
Patrick Galvin, who recorded his second double-double of the season, with 16 points on 8-of-13 shooting, with 12 rebounds, five assists, three steals, and no turnovers.
Freshman
Tyler Faux and Glinsky paced the offense with 19 points each, as Faux shot 6-of-12 from the floor and Glinsky shot 7-of-10 including 4-of-6 from three. Hudak rounded out the offense with 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting with nine boards. Senior
Josh Bailey contributed a strong defensive effort in the loss, totaling two steals and five rebounds while adding a team-high seven assists.
FDU (10-11, 5-5 MAC Freedom) was led by Andy Fleurantin with 22 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including 5-of-7 from three. Kenneth LaRocca recorded a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds adding eight assists, while Oliver Ortman (16 points), Devon Murray (13 points), and Cameron Saintill (13 points) rounded out the Devils offense.
The Monarchs shot 47.8 percent (33-69) for the game, including 36.0 percent (9-25) from three, compared to the offensive explosion from the Devils who shot 52.3 percent for the game, including 43.9 percent from three. King's held the advantage on the boards in the loss, out-rebounding FDU 37-32. As a team, the Monarchs also dished out 17 assists on their 33 field goals, and forced seven Devils turnovers while committing five steals.
Inside the box score, the Monarchs held the advantage in points from turnovers (15-12), points in the paint (44-22), and fast break points (22-9).
King's will travel down to Doylestown, PA to take on the Delaware University Aggies on Wednesday, February 12 for a 6:00 p.m. tip-off in the MAC Freedom doubleheader.
