Fourth-Ranked Elmira Use Big Third Period To Pull Away From Monarchs

PITTSTON, PA (February 8, 2020) --- The fourth-ranked Elmira College women's ice hockey scored five goals in the third period to pull away from a gritty King's College squad for a 9-0 victory in an United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) game from the Revolution Ice Centre in Pittston on Saturday afternoon.

A short-handed Monarch team (2-17-1 (1-12-0) who were playing with just two lines due to injuries and illness held their own against the fresh national title contenders for the second time this season. The Soaring Eagles' scheduled game at Wilkes on Friday night was postponed while the Monarchs played William Smith. Elmira (16-2-2, 11-1-0) opened the game with three quick goals in the first eight minutes to open a 3-0 lead. The King's defense regrouped after the tough start and held the high scoring Eagles off the board for the final 12:20 of the first period and first 15:54 of the second period before Claire Meeder found the back of the net for her third goal of the season. That stretch included two penalty kills for the Monarchs.

Elmira broke the game open in the third period scoring five times including three times in the final two minutes. Emma Crocker finished the game with three points on two goals and an assist while Devyn Gilman recorded three assists. Morgan Mordini and Bella Hanson each had a goal and an assist while Tristen Tolan assisted on two goals.

Emma Zeveney made 32 saves in goal for the Monarchs while facing 41 shots including 10 on power plays. King's was outshot 41-8 in the game and blocked an additional 21 shots. Erin King led the team with six blocks while Raeann Clancey blocked five. Caitlin Redden and Tessa Schaefer-Flynn each had two shots to lead the offensive attack.

King's will have little time to rest as they will be back in action on Tuesday with a midweek non-conference game against SUNY Cortland at Revolution Ice Centre beginning at 5 pm.
