LAKE CANE, FL (March 1, 2020) -- The King's College women's tennis team started its 2020 campaign out Sunday morning down on its Spring Break trip to Orlando, but Emerson College won two of three in doubles to eke out a 5-4 win over the Monarchs in play from Lake Cane Tennis Center.
In doubles, King's (3-2) got on the board first thanks to a victory by
Lauren Lamarca and
Addie Atkins at No. 3 doubles, rolling to an 8-2 victory. The other two doubles' matches were nip and tuck the entire time, as the Lions chalked up wins at No. 1 and No. 2 to take a 2-1 edge going to singles.
At No. 1 singles, King's pair of
Alexis Zalutko and
Emily Fernandez were deadlocked at seven games apiece with Annie Woodbury and Sophie Oglensky, but the Lion pair secured the victory with an 8-6 win in the tiebreaker.
Emerson (4-2) would take a 3-1 lead with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles by Thea Nagle over
Mikayla Reynolds, while Woodbury made the EC edge 4-1 with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles. King's would stop the run by Emerson thanks to a victory at No. 1 singles, as Fernandez outlasted Eliana Flores-Barber in an epic match. Fernandez fell 6-4 in the first set, but in true Fernandez fashion battled back to post a 6-1 win in the second. In the super-tiebreaker, the King's junior leader was dominant, posting a 10-1 victory to claim the match.
The Monarchs though would have their fate sealed in the next match to finish, as Zalutko lost her No. 3 singles match 6-4, 6-2 to Oglensky to give the Lions the sought after fifth win of the match. Despite that though, King's continued to fight at No. 5 and No. 6, earning a pair of tight wins.
Atkins lost the first set in her No. 6 singles match to Sarah Skeeles in a tiebreak, but responded with a 6-3 win in the second set to push the match to a super. In the tie-break, Atkins earned a 10-7 win to move to 7-2 in singles play this season and 4-0 in dual matches this year.
Lamarca also had a three-set marathon at No. 5 singles, as once again King's bounced back from a first-set loss. Lamarca dropped the first stanza 6-3, but refocused and chalked up a 6-4 win in the second. The super-tiebreaker was another tightly-contested battle, but Lamarca outlasted Cassia Burns 10-8 for the win.
King's will return to action tomorrow, Monday, March 2 taking on Trine University at 11:30 a.m. in non-conference action from the USTA National Campus Center in Orlando, FL.
