Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Late Run Comes Up Short As King's Women's Lacrosse Falls at Marymount

ARLINGTON, VA (March 2, 2020) -- King's College scored the final three goals of the game Monday afternoon in non-conference action at Marymount University, but time ran out for the Monarchs as they fell to the host Saints 15-13 in non-conference women's lacrosse play from Long Bridge Park.

The Monarchs (1-4) played well for the majority of the contest, but a stretch midway through the second half provided the cushion for the Saints (4-0) to fend off the late push from King's. The Monarchs allowed the first two tallies, but responded with authority posting the next five tallies including two from freshman Celia Medina. Emily Peters of Marymount stopped the run, but junior Mary Kate Klodarska scored with the man advantage to make the score 6-3 in favor of the Monarchs.

Marymount would come on strong though towards the end of the half, netting five of the final six goals of the opening stanza to take a 8-7 lead heading into the intermission. After the break, sophomore Jen O'Connor and junior Emma Lehman tallied to give the Monarchs the lead once more at 9-8 four minutes into the second half. The Saints would regain the momentum from that point, tallying the next five scores to make the score 13-9. Junior Kylie McCarthy would stop the run with a free position goal at 16:53, but MU potted two more unassisted goals to make the score 15-10 with just under nine minutes to play.

King's would show some heart and fight though down the stretch, dominating the draw circle to allow for a comeback attempt. Sophomore Emily Sims started the run for King's with a tally with 7:24 to go to cause the Saints to take a timeout. After the stoppage, Klodarska posted an unassisted man-up goal, as she rolled to her right and fired a shot from the eight-meter arc past the Marymount keeper to make it 15-12. King's got another draw control, but the next shot for the Monarchs by McCarthy was stopped by back-up keeper Mariel Russ.

King's would cause two turnovers over the next two minutes to get the ball back, and Sims tallied again with 2:37 to play to make it a two-score game at 15-13. On the ensuing draw, Medina scooped the loose ball by a suspect charge call on O'Connor allowed Marymount to get the ball back with just over two minutes to play. King's was forced to chance the Saints in the stall, and Marymount would successfully run the clock out to earn the victory.

Medina and Sims each finished with three points apiece, as Sims led the offensive goal ledger with three scores while also posting two ground balls and three caused turnovers. Medina added two draw controls and a caused turnover in addition to her two goals, while Klodarska, Lehman and O'Connor all finished with two scores. O'Connor also posted seven draw controls and two caused turnovers, and Kelly Pierce added three ground balls, five draw wins and two caused turnovers.

In net, Orla Cottell played 47:17 in net to make nine saves, while Jessie Smalley logged just under 13 minutes of action with two saves. King's was outshot on the day 34-25, but scored on all four of its free position attempts while earning a 17-12 edge in draw controls. King's was 14-of-23 on clear attempts as well, while the Saints only had two of their 21 clears finish unsuccessfully. Madison Davis posted three goals and three assists to lead MU.

King's is now off for 11 days before heading to Mahwah, NJ to take on the Roadrunners of Ramapo College Friday, March 13 at 3:30 p.m. in non-conference action.
