AUBURNDALE, FL (March 2, 2020) ---
Jacob Lupas threw 6.2 strong innings to lead the King's College baseball team to a 4-0 game one victory over Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) on Monday morning from the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex in Auburndale, FL. The Engineers won the nightcap 6-4 in nine innings.
Lupas kept the Engineers off balance in the opener striking out four and walking just one. The junior allowed seven hits over his sis-plus innings of work but only had two runners get pass second base all game. The biggest MSOE threat came in the third inning when back-to-back singles and a walk loaded the bases with one out. Lupas got out of the jam with a big strikeout and grounder to short.
King's (4-2) got on the board in the first inning as
Seth Laky knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly down the right field line and then
Kyle Friebolin had a hard hit single up the middle to
Chris Burke. The Monarchs added a run in the second when
Matt Dobeck laid down a perfectly placed bunt down the third base line with two outs, stole second, and then scored on a wild throw by the pitcher to first. KC capitalized on five Engineering errors in the game scoring three unearned runs.
The Monarchs scored their final run in the fifth inning on a Laky walk, a
Brendan Mozeleski two-out single through the right side, and then a
Jonathan Hoyt single to left. The Engineers threatened to score in the seventh on Lupas getting a single and a double with two outs. The Monarchs brought in
Brandon Moffitt who ended the game on a strikeout after walking a batter to load the bases.
Mason LeBreck struck out five on the hill for MSOE in six innings of work while allowing seven hits. Hoyt led the Monarchs with two hits while Laky drew two walks. Dobeck scored a pair of runs and stole a base.
In the nightcap, King's took advantage of a first inning error by MSOE to plate the first run. Dobeck started the innings getting on bae via the error. Hoyt moved him over with a slow roller to third before Dobeck advanced to third on a wild pitch. Burke knocked him in with a groundout to short.
The Engineers took the lead with a run in the third and fourth innings. MSOE took advantage of King's first fielding mishap of the day in the third as Chris Barnes knocked in a run with a double down the right field line. In the fourth, The Engineers put together a small two-out rally with a couple of hits. The Engineers totaled three hits in the inning including back-to-back infield singles on slow rolling balls.
In the bottom of the inning
Noah Adams singles down the line in right and then
Will McIntosh doubled down the line in left to put runners on second and third with one out. Friebolin knocked in one run with a single through the left side to tie the game but the second runner was thrown out at home on a great throw by the MSOE leftfielder. Both teams scored in the fifth with the Engineers scoring an unearned run and King's scoring without a hit in the inning. MSOE loaded the bases in the top half of the inning before
Cooper Johnson induced a groundout to second to keep the game at 3-2 in favor of the Engineers. Hoyt walked to begin the bottom half and then Burke was hit by a pitch. Following a double steal, Keating walked to load the bases with one out. Adams knocked in one run with a sacrifice fly to right but that was all the Monarchs would score.
Neither team was able to score again until the ninth inning when MSOE plated three runs on five hits and an error. The Engineers received a single and a double to score the first run of the inning before a fielding error put runners on the corners with no outs. A sacrifice fly to right and a single to the gap in left center gave the Engineers a three-run cushion heading into the bottom of the inning. Burke, Mellinger, and Keating all walked to load the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth. After an infield fly Buke scored on a wild pitch putting the tying run on second with two outs. Laky hit the ball hard but it went right to the center fielder giving MSOE the game two victory.
Both teams used five pitchers each in the game with
Shane Beyers getting the start for the Monarchs. He went three innings allowing two runs, one earned on three hit and a walk with one strikeout. Mozeleski went 1.1 innings allowing just two hits and one unearned run. Johnson was effective in 1.2 innings giving up just one hit and walking two. Moffitt was credited with the loss throwing 2.2 innings and allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits.
Landon LaBar struck out one while facing two batters.
Friebolin, Hoyt, and Dobeck each had two hits on the day. Friebolin drove in a pair of runs while Dobeck scored three times and stole three bases. The Monarchs were a perfect 6-for-6 on stolen base attempts as Burke swiped a couple of bases and Hoyt had a steal.
The Monarchs will now be off until Thursday when they will face Wartburg College in a single nine inning game starting at 2 pm from the Lake Myrtle Complex in Auburndale.
