KISSIMMEE, FL (March 4, 2020) -- Junior
Emily Fernandez continued her dominant stretch of play Wednesday with two victories against Adrian College, but for the second straight day the Monarch women's tennis team was edged 5-4 as the Bulldogs earned the narrow victory in play from Oak Street Community Park.
The Bulldogs (5-4) earned the extra doubles point, but King's earned a win at the No. 1 position as Fernandez and Zalutko pulled away late from Samantha Cyrus and Bethany Posey for an 8-6 victory.
In singles play, Fernandez made quick work of her opponent with a 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 1 spot, as she has now lost just two games over her last three matches at the top position. Zalutko earned her second win of the match at No. 3 singles, as she came back from a 6-3 loss in the opening set to earn a 6-1 victory in the second. The super-tiebreaker was all Zalutko, as she bested Posey 10-3 to pick up the win.
Sophomore
Mikayla Reynolds also was victorious at No. 4 singles for King's, as she also had to rally for the win after falling 6-2 in the first. The sophomore was undeterred though, as she earned a 7-6 (2) win in the second to push the match to an extra 10-point tiebreaker. In the stanza, Reynolds edged Vasiliki Gargasoula 10-6 to earn the win.
The Monarchs had some bad luck at No. 5 singles as
Lauren Lamarca had to withdraw from the match due to injury, and PJ Kaur was topped 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6 singles to finish the day.
King's will complete its Spring Break trip Thursday morning with an 8:00 a.m. match against Muskingum College from the USTA National Campus.
