WILKES-BARRE, PA (March 7, 2020) -- The King's College men's lacrosse team moved to 5-0 for the first time in program history Saturday with an impressive performance, blanking Alfred State 20-0 in non-conference play from McCarthy Stadium for just the second-ever shutout for King's.
The victory marked the first time the Monarchs have won its first five games of a season, besting the previous program-best start of 4-0 in 2014. Furthermore, the shutout of Alfred State Saturday was just its second ever, joining a 12-0 win over Alvernia University back on March 26, 2011. The five-game win streak for King's is also tied for the longest ever with a five-game stretch during the 2013 season.
Diving into the record book, the 20 goals were the fourth-most in a single game for King's, while the 13 assisted goals were the third-most ever. The 59 ground balls scooped up were the fourth-most in a contest in program history, while the 20-for-22 face-off percentage was the best percentage ever and the second-most face-off wins ever.
Despite scoring 30 seconds into the game on Saturday thanks to a Brandon Gambino goal from brother
Jared Gambino, King's offense would sputter through the opening quarter leading just 2-0 after 15 minutes following a goal by
Alec Martin at 3:29 of the first quarter.
The Monarchs doubled their offensive output in the second quarter, as junior
Gabe Vansuch tallied twice sandwiched by goals from
Jared Gambino and the first collegiate goal from
Nick Solinsky to take a 6-0 lead into halftime.
After the break King's would get its offensive attack firing on all cylinders, potting 11 goals in the third quarter to take a commanding 17-0 lead after 45 minutes. The 11 goals in the third period were the most ever for a single quarter in program history.
In the fourth, King's continued to dominate possession thanks to a overpowering performance from junior
Trevor Douenias at the dot as the Monarchs cruised to the victory. Douenias finished with a school-record 20 face-off wins on Saturday, eclipsing the previous record of 19 held by
Nick Foley against Morrisville St. on March 22, 2018.
Offensively, King's had 14 players net points in the game led by the six points each from
Jared Gambino and Martin. Martin finished with four goals and two assists, while Gambino flipped his score line with two goals, four helpers and five ground balls.
Vansuch tallied four goals as well, while Solinsky totaled two scores and two assists as well. Junior
Michael O'Brien scored a pair of markers for King's, and sophomore
Alex Acosta, sophomore
Paul Trabucco, freshman
Hunter Landon and senior
Sean Morrissey all netted their first-ever King's College goals.
The highlights didn't just come on offense though, as the defensive unit collected a ton of statistics. Junior
Patrick Burnham had a career day for the Monarchs, as he finished with career-highs of five caused turnovers and six ground balls.
Senior
Jacob Wrede also chalked up four caused turnovers and four loose ball pick-ups, while junior defender posted a career-high eight ground balls. In all, 20 players had at least one ground ball or one caused turnover. Freshman
Tyler Sindel also tallied three ground balls and his first career assist.
