WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 17, 2021) --
Ellie Glatz was phenomenal in goal making 27 saves to lead the King's College field hockey team to a thrilling 2-1 double overtime victory over visiting Marywood University on Sunday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium.
Sara Whitesell scored the game-winning goal just before time expired in the second extra session.
Prior to the game the Monarchs honored their six senior players. The student-athletes who were honored are
Kim Camacho,
Bailey Jordan,
Kristen Mahon,
Lexi Prowker,
Danielle Runo, and
Emily Sims.
King's (4-8) struck first just 39 seconds in the game off a penalty corner inserted by Runo. Runo sent the corner up top before receiving the ball back along the left side. She sent a pass across the goal line to
Emma Clark who knocked it into the cage for her second goal of the weekend. Marywood (7-7) responded with their first offensive attack of the game putting pressure on Glatz. Glatz stopped back-to-back effort before the Pacers earned a penalty stroke. Cydney Lahr stepped up and tried to beat Glatz right but the sophomore was able to get a glove on the ball knocking it away. Two minutes later MU earned another penalty stroke, and this time Lauren Smith took it for the Pacers and tried to beat Glatz to the left but once again the keeper won the battle knocking the ball away and off the post for another save.
Glatz also received help from the defense as Prowker recorded a defensive save in the 11th minute to keep the visitors scoreless. Marywood outshot the Monarchs 9-1 in the first quarter with KC stopping all eight shots that went on goal. The Pacers kept on the offensive attack during the second quarter taking 10 shots while putting seven on goal. Each shot was knocked away by Glatz. Runo nearly doubled the KC lead in the 18th minute, but her attempt was knocked away by Pacer keeper. Marywood put six shots on goal in the 24th minute with Glatz staying strong and keeping anything and everything out of the back of the cage. She had already hit her season-high in saves by halftime with 14 first half saves as King's went into the break with a 1-0 lead.
The teams played even in the third quarter as it started to rain a bit at McCarthy Stadium. Both teams had chances in the opening minutes of the half with neither team able to find the back of the cage. The Monarchs put a barrage of shots on goal in the 36th minute with Clark getting stopped by Rachel Yohn and then
Jessie Smalley recording shots on back-to-back corners that were saved. Marywood got a shot past Glatz in the 44th minute that did not reach the cage as
Abby Wolfe stepped in front and stopped the shot to keep the Monarchs in the lead going into the fourth quarter.
Marywood managed to tie the game up at one on their first shot of the fourth quarter. Corrin Hasty inserted a corner up to the top of the circle. The ball made its way to the right wing where Lauren Youngken sent a feed across the field to the far post when Hasty was waiting to knock the ball in for her first goal of the year. Both teams fought hard to get the go-ahead goal over the final 13 minutes of the quarter but neither team prevailed in scoring a goal. The Monarchs perhaps came the closest in the 56th minute as
Emma Clark sent a shot past Yohn that was headed for the cage until Klaira Bievenour stepped in front to stop the ball for a defensive save.
The teams battled back and forth throughout the overtime period with neither team able to score that golden goal over the first 19 minutes of extra time. King's showed little signs of playing in their second overtime game of the weekend against the Pacers. As time winded down and the game seemingly headed to strokes, King's put together one last offensive push in the final 10 seconds. Prowker had the ball in the right offensive corner and sent a pass in towards the goal with the final seconds winding down on the clock. Whitesell received her pass right in front of the cage and knocked it in for her fourth goal of the season right before the clock expired giving the Monarchs the thrilling 2-1 victory.
The 27 saves by Glatz are the second-most in program history only behind Missy Boyle who recorded 32 saves against Elizabethtown on September 25, 1993. They are also the ninth-most in an NCAA Division III game this year.
Marywood finished the game with 38 shots putting 30 on goal while the Monarchs had 20 shots with 13 on goal. The Pacers held a 20-17 advantage in penalty corners.
The Monarchs will look to build off the momentum of the thrilling victory on Wednesday when they host cross-town rival Wilkes University in their final home game of the year. The contest against the Colonels is scheduled for a 7 pm start at McCarthy Stadium.
