Shalvey Scores Game-Winner in Overtime Thriller at Wilkes

WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 19, 2021) --- Senior Kyle Shalvey buried a penalty kick in the 95th minute of play to send the King's College men's soccer team past cross-town rival Wilkes in a thrilling contest. With the win, the Monarchs improve to 7-4-1 overall and 4-1 in MAC Freedom play, including three straight wins.

The Monarchs started the game strong, earning the first shot of the game in the sixth minute, but Evan Egnatovich missed his shot high. KC continued to press the Colonels and launch shots at goal, but were unable to capitalize on their opportunities in the first half. King's held a 5-3 advantage in shots at halftime, and controlled most of the possession.

Wilkes got on the board first when Lucas Mueller scored with just over 10 minutes off the clock in the second period. The Monarchs began to search for an equalizer and nearly found it when Chris Vollrath created an opportunity near the net, but KC was unable to finish the chance.

In the 81st minute Aziz Atiyeh blew past the Colonel defense and played a dime into the path of Alex Showalter who placed his shot into the back of the net to level the match at 1-1. The goal marked Showalter's third in the last two games. After 90 minutes the match was all square, with the momentum in the hands of the Monarchs having just scored a late equalizer.

It didn't take long for the Monarchs to seal the game as they earned a penalty kick just six minutes into OT which Shalvey tucked away into the bottom right corner for his third game-winner of the season.

King's held a 14-12 shot advantage on Wilkes, including 7-2 on goal. Atiyeh and Liam McLoughlin led the Monarch offense with three shots each. Cole Catherman earned the win in net for KC while adding one save.

KC will look to continue their strong play on Saturday night when they face off against Arcadia University in another MAC Freedom matchup. Prior to the 730 pm kickoff at McCarthy Stadium the King's College men's soccer team will honor its ten seniors.
