WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 2, 2021) ---
Ashley Dukehart scored her first career goal in the best possible way scoring the game-winner in the 95th minute to give the Monarchs a 3-2 victory over Immaculata on Saturday evening at McCarthy Stadium.
King's (2-4-0) came out of the gates strong, dominating possession in the early stages of the first half. The Monarchs opened the scoring in the 15th minute when
Leah Sankey found herself one on one with the Immaculata goalkeeper, Brooke Shissler, and slipped the ball into the back of the net. Just nine minutes later Sankey added to her tally on a similar play that led to her racing past the Immaculata back line and beating out Shissler once more bringing the Monarchs to an early 2-0 lead.
The Mighty Macs began to search for an answer late in the first half and finally converted on an opportunity in the 38th minute when Nicole Brennan ripped a shot past Monarch goalkeeper
Tara Bender. The Immaculata goal shrunk the King's lead to 2-1 going into halftime.
IU continued their forward play into the second half and scored just a few minutes into the period. Kristen Guthier found the back of the net for the Mighty Macs off an assist from Nicole Winouski. The score brought the match to a 2-2 deadlock with plenty of soccer left to play.
KC tried to respond quickly, but a shot from
Ali Devers missed high in the following minute. Both sides continued to battle for possession as they aimed to break the stalemate, however neither team were able to take advantage of the opportunities they managed to create. After 90 minutes the match remained level and the squads prepared themselves for overtime.
After bringing on a few substitutes three minutes into the overtime, the Monarchs charged down the field and applied pressure to the Immaculata defense. In the 95th minute,
Madelyn Reuter found herself on the left wing and struck a low cross into the box. The ball skipped past a Mighty Mac defender and landed right in the path of Dukehart who buried her shot into the top right corner, leaving Shissler no chance. The game-winner marked Dukehart's first career goal.
King's held a 21-7 shot advantage in the match, including 11-3 in shots on goal.
Alyssa Macher led the Monarchs with four shots. Sankey's brace marked the second and third goals for her this season.
King's will look to carry this momentum into Wednesday night when the open up conference play at FDU-Florham. Kickoff is set for 7 pm in Madison, NJ at Robert T. Shields Field.
