WILKES-BARRE, PA (October 20, 2021) --- The host Wilkes University women's soccer team scored the lone goal of the game in the 51st minute to defeat the Monarchs in a closely contested MAC Freedom match.
King's (3-7-1) saw the first opportunity of the match in the fifth minute when
Leah Sankey ripped a shot off the post. Wilkes (6-6-2) responded in the 15th minute with an effort on goal, but
Tara Bender was up for the task and made the save. As the first half continued, both sides battled for possession in search of the go-ahead goal. At halftime, the match remained all square at 0-0.Â
The Monarchs started the second half as the aggressors and earned three straight corners in first few minutes. Unfortunately, they were unable to convert on any of the set pieces. The Colonels sparked a counter-attack directly after, which led to the opening goal of the match from Erica Feese.Â
Having just gone down, King's turned back to the attack in search of an equalizer and nearly found it in the 54th minute when
Gabriella Porchetta's shot drilled the crossbar. The Monarchs pressed for the remainder of the second half, but were unable to find the back of the net against WU.Â
The Colonels held a slight 11-9 advantage in shots, while KC led 7-4 in corner kicks. Bender made six saves in net for the Monarchs, while Porchetta, Sankey,
Angelina Falcone, and
Alyssa Macher all recorded two shots.
King's returns home on Saturday for senior day against Arcadia. Kickoff is set for 5:00 pm at McCarthy Stadium.
